Cole Hocker, 2018, Indiana
The phenom that took the 2024 Paris Olympic games by storm had a much humbler start, racing through the high school system in Indianapolis. Cole Hocker ran a 4:36 mile as an eighth grader before quickly positioning himself as one of the best in the state. He rode that wave to winning the 2018 Foot Locker Cross Country Championship.
From there he took a trip to the west coast, where he went on to compete for the Oregon Ducks. He won the NCAA 3000m Championship in 2021 with a 7:46.15 and the mile in the same year with a 3:53.71. He finished his career as a four-time collegiate champion.
He competed at the 2020 Olympics, finishing sixth in the 1500m before returning to the stage in Paris for the 2024 Games. There, Hocker pulled off a massive upset, winning the 1500m gold. A year later he won the World Athletics Championship 5000m competition.
Grant Fisher, 2013 & 2014, Michigan
Grant Fisher is one of the select few to have won the Brooks XC Championship multiple times, which launched him into instant stardom. The Canadian-born Michigander won the high school competition in 2013 and 2014, leveraging that into a Gatorade Player of the Year in Michigan in 2014.
He competed for Stanford in college, becoming a 12-time All-American. In college, he became the first American underglassman in 28 years to win the 5000m, and he later ran the fourth-fastest time ever by a collegian in the indoor 3000m
Fisher went on to compete at the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games, but it was in Paris where he really shined. Fisher doubled up with a pair of Bronze medals, one for the 5000m and the other for the 10000m, becoming the first American to medal in the event since 2012.
Molly Seidel, 2011, Wisconsin
Among the most decorated female champions, Molly Seidel won Gatorade National Female Cross Country Runner of the Year in 2011, the same year she earned her laurels at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships.
Seidel raced for Notre Dame in college, joining a legendary lineage of distance runners who fought for the Irish. She became the 2015 NCAA Cross Country champion, along with three track and field titles. She ended her time in college as a six-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion.
Seidel became a prolific marathoner, culminating in a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games in the mile. She has also finished sixth in the London Marathon, fourth in the New York City Marathon and eighth in the Chicago Marathon.
Edward Cheserek, 2011 & 2012, New Jersey
Edward Cheserek is another multiple-time champion, winning the competition in both 2011 and 2012. Cheserek immigrated to the United States from Kenya, where his running ability was quickly noticed.
Cheserek was recruited to the University of Oregon, where, quite simply, he became one of the most dominant collegiate athletes of all time. In total, Cheserek won 17 NCAA Championships, which is the most ever.
His most impressive feat is going back-to-back-to-back in the cross country championships, but he also managed to win nine indoor and five outdoor championships. Injuries hampered his professional career, but his success at the college level earned him a place on this list.
Dathan Ritzenhein, 1999 & 2000, Michigan
The final multiple-time winner, Dathan “Ritz” Ritzenhein was a force to be reckoned with in his high school days. He was a two-time winner of the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, and he picked up a bronze medal at the IAAF Junior World Cross-Country Championships in Belgium.
The Michigander won the cross country championship in 2003 with the Colorado Buffalos before turning his attention to the international stage. Ritzenhein competed in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, failing to ever find the podium. He did finish as the first American in 2009, finishing the marathon in 2:11:59 for ninth place.
