Lalang Makes His 10k Debut, Nellum PRs, Bayer Makes History, and Kashmir Loxsom?
Lalang Makes His 10k Debut, Nellum PRs, Bayer Makes History, and Kashmir Loxsom?

While we already covered Brigetta Barrett’s collegiate high jump record, there was other NCAA conference action that we wanted to highlight before hoping on a plane to the USATF Oxy HP Meet.
Lawi Lalang Makes His 10k Debut, Then Runs 3:38.53
After watching Lawi run the second-best NCAA Indoor double of all-time (according to you guys), we no longer know how to react when he does things like this. What do I mean by “things?” Oh, just running the 1500m prelims, then making his 10,000m debut with a win and Pac-12 Championship record, then coming back for the 1500m final and setting another conference record.
A day in life.
Again, Kyle Terwillegar did an excellent job recapping Lalang’s conference weekend in the USTFCCCA’s Athlete of the Week Awards:
Lalang (Eldoret, Kenya) set a pair of Pac-12 Championship Meet records in just his second competition of the outdoor season, winning Pac-12 titles at both 1500 and 10,000 meters. After posting the top qualifying time at 1500 meters in the prelims at 3:41.87 Saturday afternoon, Lalang showed his range in dominating the 10,000 meters later that evening in his event debut, running a meet and Loker Stadium (USC) record 28:14.63 to win by nearly 42 seconds. The performance was the second-fastest in the country this season, and he took down runner-up and previous No. 2 Parker Stinson of Oregon to do it. He completed his weekend with an emphatic victory in the 1500 meter finals, running a collegiate-leading and meet record 3:38.53. He crossed the line more than three seconds ahead of runner-up Todd Wakefield of Washington State to take down the long-standing record of 3:38.7 set in 1979 by Oregon’s Rudy Chapa.
Bryshon Nellum Runs Two PRs at Pac-12s
On the sprints side, Nellum earned himself Athlete of the Meet honors with wins in the 200m (20.23) and the 400m (44.76). While they’re both NCAA-leading marks, Nellum is now the fourth-fastest in the world in the 200m and third-fastest in the 400m.
Maybe this is the year that he finally wins that elusive NCAA title?
Andy Bayer Joins Bob Kennedy and Jim Spivey
Indiana’s Andy Bayer did what only two other Big 10 slash Indiana athletes have ever done. The Hoosiers sure love their records, huh.
Bayer defended his Big 10 1500m title with a wire-to-wire win in 3:44.24, but he wasn’t done for the day. Two hours later, Bayer’s encore performance included a win in the 5000m over Wisconsin’s Reed Connor in 13:54.90.
The Tweet of the Week Goes to the Runner's High Podcast
There was more hilarious/surprising news that came from the Big 10 Championship. In the men’s 800m, Minnesota’s Harun Abda (1:48.64) semi-surprisingly took down Penn State’s Casimir Loxsom (1:48.67). Abda has been on our radar for a while, but we’re surprised to see Loxsom falter after an impressive performance at The Penn Relays.
The real reason why Loxsom lost? Maybe he was distracted by the Big 10 announcer.

@flotrack did the #bigten announcer really just say Kashmir Loxsom? Yes. In fact he said it twice @cazzylox
