What to watch for?
Women's 200m: LSU's Kimberlyn Duncan looks unstoppable, but her road to a second NCAA 200m title won't be easy. If we learned anything from yesterday's 100m semifinals, it's that there's some girls who brought some serious speed to Eugene.

Men's 1500m: With some big names opting out of the mile (or redshirting), the men's metric mile is wide open. That's weird to say considering there's the defending champion (Indiana's Andy Bayer), one of the fastest collegiate milers of all-time (North Carolina State's Ryan Hill), and one of the favorites who missed out indoors (Oklahoma's Pat Casey).

Then there's some sub-3:40 guys (Notre Dame's Jeremy Rae and Oklahoma's Riley Masters), plus a few more tacticians who, if today is their day, could surprise the crowd.

4x4 Madness: It's all about making it through to the finals, but we can't help but think there'll be some pride on the line in both the men and women's relays. Last year, the Oregon women did the bare minimum to make it through to the finals and then broke the NCAA meet record. Still, we enjoy a little mind games in the semifinals.

Men's 10,000m: It's the first of two tough races for Arizona's Lawi Lalang. Only eleven other men have ever completed the 5k / 10k double. Will Lalang start his quest tonight? But honestly, can anyone even challenge him?

It's another day at the office for UCF's Aurieyall Scott (22.64). She had a solid grasp on the race from the start, but this semi wasn't as easy for her teammate Octavious Freeman. A&M's Olivia Ekpone closed hard and looked like she would pass Freeman, but the Aggie ran out of real estate.

Again, the top two from each heat advance automatically to the final, plus the next best two times.

Whoa... whenever there's silence in Hayward Field, you know it can't be good for the Ducks.

Oregon's English Gardner looked in pain the entire time and faded from fourth to seventh in the final 80m. We're not sure if she's injured or not, but the Ducks' hope of winning that time title are slipping away.

I'm not totally sure, but I think Gardner was projected to finish 6th in the 200m by Track and Field News. Still, her limping off the track is a BIG concern for Oregon.

Another stunner was A&M's Ashton Purvis, who's on the outside looking in. Back to the world of normal things that happen in the women's sprints, Duncan and Brown both looked comfortable and advanced with ease.

Kansas' Paris Daniels, who was the Big 12 MVP, looked solid with a sizeable win over Clemson's Dezerea Bryant. Texas Tech's Cierra White, who looked very good at the West Regional, will have to wait for that small 'q' to see if she'll make it to the finals.

There's a little semifinal battle here. A&M's Ameer Webb (
20.05) who, unlike at NCAA Indoors where he flew "under the radar," has a nice big target on his back entering the weekend. Webb ran a solid straight to pass TCU's Charles Silmon (20.30) to take the win. It should be noted that once Silmon slipped into second, he took a look to his left and right to ensure that he was safe.

He couldn't tell from up here, but Silmon could have almost come to a stop and still would have advanced.

Semifinal 2 of 3

After laying around in the mixed zone yesterday, USC's Bryshon Nellum is back to business. He ran a very even race to eventually pass UMS' Isiah Young just before the line. Nellum would dip below the 20-second mark, but a +3.2 wind would cancel that out.

Not to be lost is that LSU's Aaron Ernest finished way back in seventh. Ernest took sixth indoors and fifth last year outdoors.

The spints have been crazy all weekend. What's going on down there?

The last time ASU's Shelby Houlihan was at Hayward Field, she took down a tough Pac-12 1500m field to win the conference title. It didn't look like she was content with leading as she slid to the outside of lane one a few times, but took the pacing duty anyway. The pace seemed honest-ish, but there were at least eight girls close to the front as they took the bell.

On the backstretch, Florida's Cory McGee finally made her move to the front as the pack started to dwindle. Coming off the turn, you could tell that Oregon's Anne Kesselring had started to move because the now depressed Hayward crowd started to buzz.

In the end, the five we thought that would move on did. It was OSU's Natalja Pilisuina who took the win (and for what it's worth, she has the top seed).

That was a race for the kickers. The pace wasn't too hot for the opening lap, but FSU's Amanda Winslow quickly injected some pace and strung out the field.

The top five spots wouldn't be sorted out until the last 150m. Before it could happen, I accidentally yelled, "WATCH OUT FOR LIPARI!" who went from sixth to third in the final straight. While the crowd may have been getting loud for the Wildcat, everyone's eyes were looked on Oregon's Rebecaa Friday. The senior, who looked like she was going to miss out on making the final, found another gear and pulled a sweet inside move to get an automatic spot.

Strausa, Addison, and Moultrie were all non-factors. Feldman would struggle in the final 100m and fade to sixth.

Finish:

There go my predictions. Oregon's Mac Fleet found room in the final 100m, NC State's Ryan Hill would give us a scare, and Oklahoma's Pat Casey faded hard to finish seventh.

There wasn't too much going on before the bell lap. Casey would make a big move to the front, which was accompanied by a hand on his back courtesy of Hill. Casey looked fine until the final 100m, where the pack of nine swung out all the way to lane three to try and grab one of those auto spots.

It seemed that Fleet would be boxed in, but he somehow found some room and kicked to the crowd's delight. As he started to get passed, Casey took a look around and realized that the worst was about to happen.

Not sure if he just didn't have it today, but it looks like Casey will not appear in the final. We'll have to wait for the next heat.

I guess I should accept that we're in the Twilight Zone because that literally made no sense. Indiana's Andy Bayer initially took the pacing duties before Notre Dame's Jeremy Rae (welcome back to NCAA's) lead for a bit.

Things didn't start to pick up before 300m, where it seemed that we had finally sorted out the top five. In a weird development that can only be explained by a) exhaustion or b) he didn't see the line, Wisconsin's Alex Hatz came to a standstill 5 meters before the line and was passed by Texas' Pat McGregor.

I have to look at the compiled results, but Hatz may be out and Casey may be in. Stay tuned.

Update: Casey in, Hatz out.

That was a wreck that we all saw coming. UCLA's Brea Buchanan, who was in the lead coming off the eighth hurdle, clipped the ninth and took a BIG spill to the track. It's unfortunate for the sophomore and very reminiscent of Lolo Jones' fall from '08.

Edit: They still gave her a time. Nice work, everyone.

THAT'S THE FASTEST TIME EVER RUN BY A COLLEGIAN. TAKE A BOW, BRIANNA ROLLINS.

Back when Aries Merritt told us that Rollins could break the American 100mH record... well, we believed him. The Clemson junior was unstoppable indoors, where she not only won a national title, but set the NCAA indoor record.

Now she has both. I'd like to think that those sweet orange calf sleeves had something to do with it.

Not to be forgotton, but Rollins also has the fastest time in the world. The lead previously belonged to Dawn Harper with a time of 12.60.

To the delight of the home crowd (how many times must I write this...), Oregon's Jonathan Cabral stays out of trouble to take the win his the second heat.

I'm going to be frank: I missed all of the splits because I was looking up the history behind Brianna Rollins' record.

By the time I came back to the media booth, Emma Coburn was ahead by nearly 50m (big surprise). The field was strung out and the top five spots were already determined before the last lap.

Those five were Cornell's Rachel Sorna, Notre Dame's Alexa Aragon, Providence's Shelby Greany, and Wisconsin's Ashley Beutler.

It was all Weber State's Amber Henry and FSU's Colleen Quigley. The two ran side by side (note: Not behind each other) nearly the whole way and went one-two. The top four was well decided before the line (below), but it was fifth that was still in question with 100m to go.

Big props to Arkansas' Grace Heymsfield, who dug deep and passed MSU's Leah O'Connor steps before the line. However, O'Connor won't be kicking herself as she's the last qualifier based on time. That's your women's 3kST.

If anyone was going to give Oregon a boost, it was going to be Laura Roesler. The 800m specialist ran the third leg and while she got the stick in second, it wouldn't be long before she was in the lead.

In what was perhaps the loudest moment of the weekend, Roesler swung out into lane two and powered down the homestretch to give the Ducks the lead.

However, the Ducks' work wasn't done. They had to hold off strong challenges from Florida and Illinois, but prevailed. The top two teams will go through, plus the next two fastest times.

Fun Fact: The fastest split of the relay belongs to Illinois Ashley Spencer - 50.71

Florida makes it look so easy. Despite an early lead by Baylor, the Gators soon took the lead and never looked back. Baylor would stay in no man's land to take second with Mississippi State charging past Minnesota to take third on the last lap.

That's how get back in the game. After just missing out on the 400m final, Mike Berry runs 45.02 on the anchor leg to put the Oregon men in the 4x400m final.

That was the race for second. The guys up front, and some of our pre-race favorites to win the national relay title, was A&M. The squad of all-stars controlled the race after the first exchange and when you have Deon Lendore (44.33) on the anchor, things are generally a lock (I say generally...)

FULL SPLITS

I started writing this before the race started, so excuse me for any wrong assumptions. I said I was willing to wager that this was going to be at least 85% accurate and I'm sticking to that percentage.

Things Lawi Lalang can do during the NCAA 10k: Solve a rubik's cube, sew a sweater, learn Arabic... anything else?

I originally wrote that he's unbeatable, but he's actually almost unbeatable. One has to wonder what would've happened if Texas Tech's Kennedy Kithuka didn't redshirt this season.

We completely missed Lalang's last 3k, mile, and 1k split because the race for second stole the show. We first have to give shout-outs to OSU's Girma Mecheso and especially BYU's Jared Ward for going with Lalang. Ward is currently completely spent, sitting on the track after a his gutsy and too-high-of-a-hope move.

The chase pack, which was chomping at the bits, consisted of Texas' Craig Lutz, Oregon's Parker Stinson, Princeton's Michael Franklin, FSU's Michael Fout, and FSU's Breandan O'Neill.

While Ward, Mecheso (plus Haile and Katam) tried to hang with the King, it was those who can a conservative race that would walk away the all-American victors.

What's interesting is all week, we were talking about Texas' Ryan Dohner as a dark horse pick. It turns out that it was his teammate, Lutz, who was the first finisher for the Longhorns.

Lutz, who DNF'd at NCAA XC, was a man anew as he took the bell in second. Though he would throw down a 61-second last lap, he couldn't hold off UNC-Greensboro's Paul Katam, who found a final gear with 80m to go and would re-pass Lutz to take second.

Lutz was followed by Michael Fout, who we love to see back on the national stage, sleeper pick Princeton's Michael Franklin, and the adopted son of Eugene, Parker Stinson.

Lalang now turns his attention to his more difficult event, the 5k. He's halfway to becoming the twelvth NCAA athlete to win both the 5k and 10k, but he'll have two sub-13:20 guys standing tall in his path.

We'll see you tomorrow night (and the one after that, and after that, and after that...)
