The 2013 New Balance Outdoor Nationals kicked off this evening with some great 5,000-meter races.

On the boys’ side, Jake Leingang defended his title winning in 14:11.60. The future Oregon Duck was fresh off a win in the mile at the Portland Track Festival last weekend. He showed some of that speed today closing the last 800 meters in 2:13.

Leingang and the pack including Jack Keelin, Tanner Anderson, Sam Wharton, Tony Russell, and Stephen Shine came through the 1,600 meter mark at 4:35.

Another 4:35 for the next 1,600m put Leingang at 9:10 through 3,200 meters.

If the victory wasn’t sweet enough, how about a meet record for the Bismark native as the cherry on top of a stellar high school career.

In the women’s 5,000m championship, Ravenscroft’s Wesley Frazier took the win.

Despite an early move by Erin Finn to break up the pack before 1,000m, Frazier remained patient and was able to get back on Finn's heels two miles into the race.

Reminiscent of Leingang’s consistency, Frazier’s first two 1,600m splits were both 5:07. From there the formula is simple . . . patience + closing speed = national title.

As Frazier moves on to collegiate running, maybe we’ll see the same formula equated from her as a Duke Blue Devil.
