Lukas Verzbicas signs with New Balance
Lukas Verzbicas has signed with New Balance, according to Competitor.com. The 2011 International Triathlon Union world junior champion will continue to train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California as a Team New Balance Athlete.
“After meeting with and talking to Team New Balance athletes I look forward to achieving my athletic goals with a brand that feels like an extension of my own family,” Verzbicas said in the press release.
Though New Balance is mainly rooted in the running community, Running Sports Marketing General Manager John Evans sees an opportunity in the triathlon and Verzbicas.
“At New Balance we consider triathlon an extension of running and Lukas has strong roots within that sport," Evans said in an announcement. "We look forward to working with him to achieve excellence within the U.S. but also on the world triathlon stage.”
Back in April 2013, Flotrack visited Verzbicas following his horrific biking accident that occurred earlier that summer. The former University of Oregon Duck, and fifth U.S. high schooler in history to run sub-4 in the mile, was told that there was a possibility that his competitive career would be over. Verzbicas' next race will be the Clermont Pan American Cup on March 1 in Clermont, Florida.
“After being told I would never walk again it is a dream come true to have the support of a powerhouse running brand like New Balance,” Verzbicas said.

New Balance has had a busy 2014. In January, their Sports Marketing Team announced the addition of Mark Coogan. The former Dartmouth head coach will bring his knowledge and expertise to the Boston-based New Balance training group.
