Analysis:
New Balance swooped in and took Dartmouth’s highly rated coach, Mark Coogan, to coach their elite athete group. Of course, it wasn’t long before 7x national champion, Abbey D’Agostino, followed Coogan to Boston.
The most decorated Ivy League female runner in history, Abbey D put Dartmouth on the running map. But she is gone and this is 2014. The question is, can the Coogan/D’Agostino magic continue in New Hanover?
Certainly, it is hard to argue with the fact that Abbey’s success as a no-name runner or a one-name runner has to help new coach Courtney Jaworski as a recruiter. He can also thank Coach Coogan for not leaving the cupboard bare.
Jaworski, in his first year, coming over from Manhattanville, will have some talent to work with. He has to be happy to see returning junior All-American Dana Giordano. She was 31st in last year’s big race as a sophomore, and then with Coogan coaching from long distance for track, she managed a fantastic 15:53 on the track for 5k.
Giordano will get some nice help from fellow juniors Liz Markowitz and Reid Watson, both of whom recorded PR’s on the track, although it may fall to lone senior, Sarah Delozier, to be the number two for the Big Green. She showed some nice improvement on the track with her 10:16 3k steeple, and she was 129th as a junior in Terre Haute.
Challenging all but Diordano should be freshman, Ellie Gonzales, from Catholic High in Maryland, who was 13th at the Nike National meet last year and her 10:38 3200m is a fine time. Right on her heels, might be fellow freshman, Ashley Helbig from Great Oaks, California, whose track times are very similar to Gonzales, but who seems to struggle a little more on grass.
Jaworski is taking on a big challenge. He was a very talented Ivy League runner himself at Penn. He knows this league and he has been at very high levels as a competitor. He is young, but smart. Abbey was the national champion last year, but she would have been gone whether Coogan stayed or not.
There should just be enough Abbey pixie dust left over, to carry the Dartmouth ladies to a top 20 finish.
