T&F Athletes Nominated for Laureus Awards




The 16th Laureus World Sports Awards nominees have been released and there are a few track and field names you may recognize.

The award, which recognizes achievements in all sports, is considered one of the highest honors for an athlete. The jury is made up of 48 “of the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen of all time,” according to www.laureus.com. Previous winners include Usain Bolt, Sebastian Coe, Roger Federer, Yao Ming, Kelly Slater, Serena Williams, and more.

Below are the 2015 nominees from the sport of track and field recognizing outstanding accomplishments for the 2014 calendar year:

Laureus World Sportsman of the Year
Renaud Lavillenie, France, broke Sergey Bubka’s 21-year-old PV world record

Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year
Val Adams, New Zealand, undefeated in the shot put for four years, IAAF Women’s Athlete of the Year
Genzebe Dibaba, Ethiopia, broke three world records in three events over two weeks

Laureus World Comeback of the Year
Jo Pavey, United Kingdom, won European 10,000m Championships ten months after giving birth

Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability
Tatyana McFadden, United States, won Boston, Chicago, London, and New York marathons
