Dibaba Breaks 5,000m WR in Stockholm

24-year-old Genzebe Dibaba smashed the 5,000m World record on Wednesday in Stockholm, running 14:18.86 to best the previous mark of 14:24.37. Dibaba ran smoothly through 3,000m in 8:37, right on record pace, and closed very well to best her old PB by more than 10 seconds. The Ethiopian’s last 1,000m was run in 2:47, just over 4:28/mile tempo.
The 5,000m record is the latest all-time mark on Dibaba’s resume. In 2014, Dibaba broke three world records (1500, 3k, two-mile) in the span of two weeks, establishing herself as one of the best runners ever. Last February, Dibaba won her 2nd indoor World title, this time in the 3,000m. She won her first gold medal at the 2012 indoor World Championships in the 1500m.
