Clayton Murphy Wins Gold in Toronto

Akron’s Clayton Murphy will head back to Ohio with some hardware. Some gold hardware to be specific. The 20-year-old ran to a 1:47.19 finish, edging out Rafith Rodriguez of Columbia and a very established field to take home the win in the 800m final at the Pan American Games. Murphy, who owns a PB of 1:45.59 finished third at the NCAA Championships, and fourth at the US Outdoor Championships, just two tenths of a second off the World Championship squad.

Fellow 20-year-old Kendall Baisden of Texas will bring home some gold of her own, as she won the 400m in a time of 51.81. Less than a second behind her was another 20-year-old Shakima Wimbley of Miami, who crossed the line in 52.28. Baisden and Wimbley finished seventh and eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships as well.
