ASICS Future Stars: Sophomore Boys Update #3

The very best sophomore boys throughout the country have changed very little in 2015, and thus, many of the following names appear for the third time on the ASICS Future Stars list of the best underclassmen in high school cross country.

You can check out our first two releases here and here

Without further ado, here are the 10th graders that are making the most noise as the regular season wraps up:

Josh Schumacher (Portland, OR)

The son of Nike Bowerman Track Club coach Jerry Schumacher continues to impress in his second high school XC season, as the Jesuit (OR) sophomore dropped a 30-second 5K PR of 15:07 on October 9th. That time makes him the second-fastest 10th grader in the country in 2015, and ranks him fifth overall in the state of Oregon.

Jack Landgraf (Dana Point, CA)

Landgraf still owns the fastest 3-mile by a 10th grader in 2015 (14:28), but there’s no doubt that his most impressive performance was his 14:47 last weekend at the Orange County Championships. There, the Dana Hills sophomore finished fourth, only 16-seconds behind Brea Olinda’s Austin Tamagno.

Brodey Hasty (Brentwood, TN)

Hasty makes his third straight appearance on the Future Stars list in 2015 after his 15:07 5K victory over the weekend at the MSCCA Midstate Championship. That time was a six-second PR for the Brentwood (TN) sophomore, but more impressive was his 57-second improvement from last year’s performance at the same meet.

Dustin Horter (Liberty Township, OH)

Lakota East 10th grader Dustin Horter increased his winning streak to five this past Saturday with an impressive 15:11 5K at the Greater Miami Conference Championships, dominating to the tune of a 27-second victory. His time is the fastest in the state of Ohio by all non-seniors.

Cole Johnson (Rockford, MI)

Johnson makes his second appearance on the Future Stars list after his huge breakout race at the Portage Invite on October 10th, where the Rockford (MI) sophomore lowered his 5K PR to 15:18. The miler, who turned heads last spring with his stunning 4:10 at the Michigan State meet, is making a name for himself on the XC course as his time ranks him 9th in the state this season.

Lucas Bons (Dublin, OH)

Dublin Coffman (OH) sophomore Lucas Bons continues to cut loads of time off his freshman performances, and Saturday was just the latest example as Bons won the Ohio Capital Conference Championships in a 15:20 5K PR. That time is a 58-second improvement on his 2014 race at the same meet, and ranks 10th for all sophomores in 2015.

Gabe Fendel (Fishers, IN)

Consistency has been the name of Gabe Fendel’s game in 2015, as the Hamilton Southeastern sophomore has broken the 16:00 5K barrier in every race he’s run this season. His latest outing was a 15:34 fourth place showing at the Regional meet, a 12-place improvement from last season.

Matthew Kearney (Austin, TX)

Another consistent performer rounds out today’s list, as Austin Westlake sophomore Matthew Kearney is a perfect 8-for-8 in 2015. Kearney ran his 15:27 5K PR on October 9th, which is a lot more impressive than it appears given his 31-second margin of victory.
