ASICS Future Stars: Freshman Boys Update #3

It's November, so the high school cross country scene is really heating up! In this ASICS Future Stars update we take a look at the best freshman boys across the country. Some have already competed in their respective state meets, while others have yet to throw down. This third installment of high school first years should give you a glimpse at the future of high school cross country greatness.

Here is the ASICS Future Stars Freshman Boys’ Update #3:

Camren Fischer (Fayetteville, AR)

After recording his first sub-16:00 5K at the Chile Pepper XC Festival, Fischer finished runner-up in his next two outings. He recorded a 16:31 at the Van Buren Classic and 16:14 at the Rogers Mountie Classic. Heading into the Arkansas State Meet this weekend, Fischer has the fifth-fastest 5K in the state with his Chile Pepper 15:43 performance.

Zane Fodge (McMinnville, OR)

The top freshman in the state of Oregon recorded a 16:14 16th-place finish in the Oregon 6A State Championships - over 10 seconds faster than the next best frosh. Throughout the season Fodge never finished a race worse than third, including his runner-up performance and best mark of 15:31 at the Country Fair Classic.

Sam Affolder (Carthage, NY)

Affolder’s 14:58 3 mile time is the fastest among all freshman int the country. Since recording that mark at the McQuid Invitational on October 3, the younger brother of superstar Noah lowered his 5K best by over 30-seconds when he won the Adirondack Invite on October 24 in 15:48.

Sam Toolin (North Kingstown, RI)

Toolin holds the #6 freshman 5K time in the country with his 15:39 at the Rhode Island Classic Championships on October 31, where he finished third. He also won the 4K Rhode Island Freshman State Championships in 12:39 on October 26, 40 seconds better than the next competitor.

Grant Gardner (Springville, UT)

Gardner holds the fourth-fastest freshman 3 mile time in the country with his 15:14 Cedar XC Invitational third-place finish. After winning his Region he went on to finish seventh in the Utah 4A State Championship as the only freshman in the top 30. Since breaking 16:00 at the UIAAA Invite on September 18, Gardner has been consistently under the mark for the duration of the season.

Brent Smith (Pacific Palisades, CA)

The Pacific Palisades freshman finished third in the Mt. SAC Invitational Sub-Varsity Sweeps D1 race in 15:30. It was the top freshman performance at the prestigious California meet. Smith holds the #5 freshman 3 mile time with his 15:18.40 at Woodbridge, and nearly replicated the time (15:18:68) at the Bell Gardens Invite.

Carter Cheeseman (Brentwood, TN)

The Brentwood Academy freshman has only raced three times this fall, but is sure making an impact. At the MSCCA Misstate High School Championship on October 17th, Cheeseman finished third behind two of Tennessee’s best runners, Brodey Hasty and Javan Winters, in 15:30 - making him the fastest freshman over the distance this season.
