Judy Pendergast set her standard charge-from-the-gun pace at the Illinois State Championships, but this Saturday afternoon was more special than usual as the No. 13 nationally ranked senior destroyed the historic Detweiller Park course record by 9 seconds in 15:53.8.
Pendergast, a Harvard commit, has owned the nation's fastest three mile time all year but this mark lowered her best by an unprecedented 12 seconds.
The previous all-class course record was 16:02, set in 2012 by Madeline Perez of Glenbard West.
Pendergast's individual win was not enough to propel the No. 6 nationally ranked Naperville North girls to defense of their 3A state title. Bubble team Minooka won, 130 to 147 points over NN, thanks to a fourth-place, 16:35 finish from Ashley Tutt, then solid backup from Emily Shelton (19th, 16:58), Mackenzie Callahan (20th, 17:02), Morgan Crouch (60th, 17:46) and Vivian Van Eck (66th, 17:50).
Bubble individual Lindsey Payne of Glenbard West was runner-up behind Pendergast in 16:15, which stood as the second-fastest time of the day regardless of class.
Dominant performances came out of the Class 2A and 1A Girls race as well, as undefeated Anna Sophia Keller ran the third-fastest time of the day in 16:20.5. No. 18 nationally ranked Maryjeanne Gilbert ran the No. 4 fastest time of the day to win Class 2A in 16:23.

No. 8 ranked Jon Davis of Oakwood clocked the sixth-fastest time ever recorded at Detweiller Park with 13:59.3 over three miles to win the Class 1A title in the first boys' race of the day. The senior stands only behind a list of all-time greats [as noted below] with his career-first sub-14 minute clocking and third consecutive Class 1A cross country crown.

Davis is clearly the king of Illinois, but the Class 3A race may have been the most highly anticipated of the day. No. 25 ranked Kevin Salvano took the individual title in that race in 14:20, as Charlie Kern, Jr. ran 14:22 for runner-up honors.
Make some room in the Hall of Fame. The Illinois State Cross Country Championship trophy is coming home to Sandburg.

Sean Torpy of No. 2 ranked Sandburg was third in 14:24, as the boys in blue and yellow scored 79 points to win the first cross country state team title in school history over bubble team Lyons (118 points), No. 24 Neuqua Valley (170 points) and bubble team York (171 points).
