With the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, and countless NCAA indoor events all going on at once, it was almost impossible to keep up with everything from the weekend of track madness. To bring you up to speed, we broke down the top breakthrough NCAA performances you need to know about.
Elinor Purrier Emerges as Top Miler in the NCAA
The sophomore from New Hampshire took advantage of a fast pace by putting herself in the mix with the pros when she finished fourth overall in an NCAA-leading time of 4:29 at the BU Valentine Invitational. She finished just behind Olympian Erin Donohue and also took down a pack of professionals such as Heather Wilson, Rachel Schneider, and Emily Lipari. Purrier’s performance is a full three seconds faster than the previous NCAA-leading time of 4:32 set by Kaela Edwards two weeks ago. The time is also a seven-second improvement from her previous personal best set last year and lands the No. 8 spot on the NCAA all time list.
Edward Cheserek Cruises 13:35 at Husky, Could the NCAA Triple Be in Sight?
Edward Cheserek managed to make an NCAA-leading 5K time of 13:35 look extremely easy Friday in Seattle when he kicked past All American Pierce Murphy. With a 54-second final 400m, the nine-time NCAA Champion blazed into the finish line at the Husky Classic, leading nine men under 13:50.
Gordon Mack explored the possibilities of Cheserek attempting the seemingly impossible NCAA indoor triple — mile, 3K, 5K — at the championships in March. Cheserek maintained in his post-race interview that he is still unsure of the events he would attempt in Birmingham, but with top NCAA marks in the mile and 5K, we know for sure that the Oregon Duck is definitely keeping his options open.
Freshman Allie Ostrander Now Owns NCAA Leads in 3K and 5K
Ostrander continues to race beyond her years as the Boise State standout ran her second NCAA lead in two weeks at the Husky Classic. Running aggressively from the gun, Ostrander set the pace and even executed a killer kick at the end to claim the 3K victory in 8:54.27. The time is not only an NCAA-leading mark by two seconds, but also stands as the ninth-fastest mark all-time in the NCAA. Ostrander’s performance came two weeks after setting an NCAA lead in the 5K with a runner-up finish to Kim Conley in 15:21 at the Washington Invitational, which ranks as the seventh-fastest NCAA mark all-time. The performance on Saturday earned Ostrander the honor of Tasty Race of the Week:
Raven Saunders Breaks Collegiate Record in Shot Put
The shot put queen continued her reign of the event at the Iowa State Classic when she broke the indoor collegiate record with a heave of 19.23m in Ames. The performance took down the previous record of 19.22m set by Tia Brooks at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships. Saunders’ mark, which she accomplished on the fifth attempt, stands as the best throw by a female collegian indoor or outdoor. She even surpassed her coach Connie Price-Smith and others on the way to the No. 5 spot on the U.S. all-time list and is No. 7 all-time in American history when combining indoor and outdoor marks.
Frosh Alexis Weeks Soars to NCAA Lead in Pole Vault
The Arkansas standout continued her momentum into the Tyson Invitational when she cleared an NCAA-leading height of 4.60m in Fayetteville. The mark is a massive personal best and lands the freshman the No. 9 spot on the NCAA all-time list, behind former Arkansas teammate and Worlds finalist Sandi Morris. Weeks actually finished runner-up to Morris on Saturday when the Razorback duo finished with marks of 4.70 and 4.60m, respectively.
Patrick Tiernan Solos NCAA 3K Lead
In his first indoor race of the season, Patrick Tiernan clocked an NCAA-leading time in the 3K at the FastTrack National Invitational on Friday night. The NCAA cross country runner-up soloed a 7:48.55 to claim the No. 1 spot in the NCAA, just ahead of Justyn Knight and Sean McGorty who ran 7:48.71 and 7:48.79 together at the Iowa State Classic. Tiernan didn’t need any help to get the mark as the Villanova All American was a full five seconds ahead of runner-up Henry Wynne of Virginia.
Women’s 4x400m Collegiate Record in Sight for Texas Longhorns
The collegiate record in the women’s 4x400m relay could be in jeopardy once again in 2016 as the Texas women clocked a 3:27.97 at the Tyson Invitational, which is just 0.57 seconds off the collegiate record held by Oregon. Despite losing All Americans Ashley Spencer and Kendall Baisden, the talented new foursome of Chrisann Gordon, Morolake Akinosun, Ariel Jones and Courtney Okolo took down runner-up USC by almost a full second in Fayetteville on Sat. If the Longhorns are able to come that close to the collegiate record without being pushed hard to the line, there’s no telling how fast they could run against wire-to-wire competition.
