The women's 1500m heats reached the logical conclusion of their ridiculous premise on Thursday night, with three races eliminating a total of three women from the field. We wrote before the race that the three heats would eliminate two women, but Gabe Grunewald didn't make the 5K final, which led to a field of 27 instead of the predicted 26.
Two women fell hard in the first heat, and they didn't even need to protest to advance—their times post-fall were still good enough to advance to the semifinals.
The crash in the first heat knocked down Alexa Efraimson and Rachel Schneider. Efraimson and Schneider ran 4:14 and 4:22, respectively, both good enough to advance on time. After the first heat crashed, the second heat went extremely slowly, with Brenda Martinez winning in 4:23.
That all set up an exquisite and hilarious third prelim: 10 women who had run 4:10 or faster to make the Trials just had to run faster than 4:22 to clinch advancement. And they all did, meaning a heat of 10 eliminated zero. Gabe Grunewald qualified for the 1500m semifinals just hours after missing the 5K final.
You can find full results and qualifiers here. Sarah Brown, who ran 4:25 in the first heat and was eliminated, gave birth just four months ago and was being trailed by filmmaking crews at the Trials.
