Marc Scott kicks to victory in the west 10K

After running a massive personal best of 28:07 at the Payton Jordan Invitational, Marc Scott remained dominant with a kick to win the 10K at the NCAA west preliminary round. The Tulsa All-American didn't even have to wear spikes to nab the victory in a tactical 29:50.49.

Scott led a pack of 13 men through the majority of the race until the critical final 150 meters when each athlete desperately kicked in an attempt to earn a top 12 position. Scott was followed by Rory Linkletter who closed in 29:51.63, Tanner Anderson (29:52.26), Luke Trayner (29:54.31), Matt Baxter (29:54.34), Grant Fisher (29:55.98), Clayton Young (29:56.98), Reed Fisher (29:57.37), Jerrell Mock (29:57.73), Malachy Schrobilgen (29:58.31), Hassan Abdi (29:59.42), and Sylvester Barus (30:10.61).

Annie Bothma throws down the hammer in east 10K

At one point in the race, the freshman from Coastal Carolina put 25 seconds between herself and the rest of the pack in the women's 10K at the NCAA east preliminary. Bothma has only raced four times in 2017--two indoor 5Ks, one outdoor 5K best of 16:51 and a 10K victory at the Sun Belt Conference Championships. On Thursday night, she improved upon her 10K personal best by 45 seconds when she won the east preliminary in 33:37. Veronica Eder and Regan Rome caught Bothma towards the end and finished just one second behind her. NCAA leader Anna Rohrer safely secured her spot with a seventh-place finish in the race.

Erik Peterson leads tight finish in the east

The Butler All-American unleashed a kick to win the east 10K and claim an automatic spot in the NCAA championship. Peterson won the preliminary in 29:55.06 and was followed closely by Arsene Guillorel of Samford (29:56.20), Lucas Stalnaker (29:57.92), Jacob Thomson (29:58.08), Jacob Choge (29:58.13), George Parsons (29:58.60), Gilbert Kirui (29:59.03), Alfred Chelanga (29:59.98), Jonathan Green (30:02.62), Antibahs Kosgei (30:02.96), Frank Lara (30:04.28), and Colin Bennie (30:05.04).

Alice Wright cruises to win NCAA west

The New Mexico All-American easily secured her position in Eugene with a victory in the women's 10K out of the west. Wright worked alongside a pack that included Sharon Lokedi of Kansas, Jamie Kempfer of Missouri, Charlotte Taylor of USF, and Winny Koech of UTEP who all secured top places behind her.

Erin Clark of Colorado, Bethan Knights of Cal, Alyssa Snyder of Montana State, Grace McDonnochie of Portland, Isobel Batt-Doyle of Washington, Jocelyn Caro of Texas Tech, and Makena Morley of Colorado rounded out the top 12 spots.

Christian Coleman jogs 9.96 to advance

Tennessee's three-time NCAA champion didn't leave anything to chance in the first round of the men's 100m. Coleman blasted a 9.96 (+1.7) winning time to easily claim section six and advance to the second round out of the NCAA east preliminary. Coleman's performance is the eighth-fastest mark on the collegiate all-time list and is just 0.01-seconds shy of his wind-legal personal best set at the Olympic Trials last year. Coleman will also compete in the 200m, where he just ran a personal best of 19.98 to win the SEC Championships.

Cameron Burrell runs windy 9.90

A few minutes after Coleman jogged 9.96 in the east, Cameron Burrell threw down a 9.90 in the west. The All-American from Houston was pushed by a +4.5 wind in Austin, but the mark is still an impressive feat. Prior to the NCAA west performance, Burrell had never run under 10 seconds in the 100m. His wind legal personal best is 10.16 from the 2016 Tom Tellez Invitational.

In the following heats, Oregon's Demarcus Simpson ran 9.94 (+4.0) and Arkansas' Kenzo Cotton notched 9.96 (+4.0).

NCAA champion, All-Americans knocked out in 1500m

The men's 1500m in the NCAA east preliminary knocked out an NCAA champion and several All-Americans. NCAA indoor mile champion Henry Wynne was eliminated in the first round after finishing 11th in section two. Wynne will not advance in the 1500m, but he has another chance to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5K on Saturday.

Adam Palamar of Syracuse finished 11th in section three and missed the opportunity to advance. Palamar finished fifth in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. Last year, Palamar finished eighth in the mile and 12th in the 1500m at the NCAA championships.

Sampson Laari of Middle Tennessee finished seventh in section four, ending a season which included a third-place finish in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships. His teammate Eliud Rutto also failed to advance in the 1500m after finishing eighth in section two. Rutto notched a 1:45 800m personal best at the Mt. SAC Relays in April. Rutto returned in the 800m where he automatically qualified to the quarterfinal round with a runner-up finish in section two.

Big 10 champion Justine Kiprotich of Michigan State was not allowed to run the preliminary round because he forgot to put his bib number on. However, he has been added to the quarter-final field as of Friday morning. His PB of 3:42.36 ranks No. 26 in the NCAA this year.

The fastest time of the first round was run by Ole Miss All-American Craig Engels who won section three with a time of 3:46. The second round of the men's 1500m will take place on Saturday.
