Robby Andrews can rest easy now that he's notched the standard to compete for the United States at the IAAF World Championships in August.

The national champion finished second to Johnny Gregorek in a final time of 3:35.25 at the TrackTown Summer Series: New York on Thursday night. The performance safely landed Andrews under the standard of 3:36.00, which he needed to run before the July 21 deadline.

At the USATF Outdoor Championships in June, Andrews claimed his first ever national title when he out-kicked Olympic gold medalist Matt Centrowitz in the 1500m. Although he won the championship, Andrews still needed to run under the standard in order to compete in London at the world championships. The standard attempt in New York took place four days after Andrews tried to run under the mark at the TrackTown Summer Series: Portland competition. After the pace lagged with one lap remaining, Andrews stepped off the track in order to save his energy for the next attempt in New York. With the standard completed, Andrews will now officially represent Team USA for the third time in his career.

Race winner Gregorek also had a breakthrough performance. His 3:35.00 victory dipped under the IAAF standard and also established a massive personal best. At the USATF Outdoor Championships, Gregorek made his first world championship team when he finished third in the 1500m final. Prior to USAs, Gregorek held a 1500m personal best of 3:36.04 from last year's TrackTown Summer Series competition. Gregorek's father John made the 1980 and 1984 Olympic teams as a steeplechase runner, and his son just beat his 1500m career best.
