One year after winning the Olympic gold medal, Michelle Carter returned to the podium by earning bronze in the women's shot put Wednesday at the IAAF World Championships in London.

Lijao Gong of China won her first world championship gold with a throw of 19.94m, Anita Marton of Hungary claimed silver with a throw of 19.49m, and Carter walked away in third place with a throw of 19.14m.

Carter's performance marks her fifth medal at a global championship. She earned bronze at the 2012 World Indoor Championships, bronze at the 2015 World Championships, gold at the 2016 World Indoor Championships, and gold at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Gong's performance is a vast improvement on her fourth-place finish at the 2016 Olympic Games and her silver medal at the 2015 World Championships. She has come so close to gold for a number of years, and can finally call herself a world champion. Even two-time Olympic gold medalist Valerie Adams had to congratulate her longtime rival.

Marton's silver follows a bronze-medal performance at the 2016 Olympic Games. London marks her first outdoor world championship medal of her career.
