2017 FloXC Countdown: #7 Alaska Anchorage Women
Follow our 2017 FloXC Countdown, where FloTrack ranks the top ten cross country teams and individuals in the NCAA this season which will be LIVE on FloTrack. The No. 7 women's spot goes to Alaska Anchorage, and here's why:
SR Caroline Kurgat (33:38 10K; 3rd at '16 NCAA XC)
SR Mariah Burroughs (10:39 3K SC; 74th at '16 NCAA XC)
JR Zennah Jepchumba (17:21 5K; 101st at '16 NCAA XC)
SR Tamara Perez (4:29 1500; 123rd at '16 NCAA XC)
JR Kimberly Coscia (75th at '15 NCAA XC)
The Seawolves from Alaska Anchorage have placed in the top eight at NCAAs for nine straight seasons, and an experienced roster led by a national title contender should be enough to extend their streak to 10. UAA loses just one runner out of their top seven from 2016, and despite that loss being All-American Joyce Chelimo, this team can offset her departure with expected improvements from their second through fifth runners.
Senior Caroline Kurgat has finished in the top 10 each of the last two seasons and will have a good shot at winning this November. Despite owning a 10K PR that is just outside the DII all-time top-10 (33:38), Kurgat has yet to win an NCAA title, but this cross country season will be her best shot yet now that two-time XC champ Kendra Foley has graduated.
The experience of Kurgat's supporting cast will be an invaluable asset. The projected top five all have scored at NCAAs, and in the case of seniors Mariah Burroughs and Tamara Perez, have improved a lot in the last year. Perez was all-conference last year after finishing 33rd in 2015, and Burroughs qualified for NCAA outdoor for the first time this past spring. UAA also has to be excited about junior Zennah Jepchumba, who probably would've finished much higher last November if she wouldn't have gone out so conservatively. Jepchumba moved up 99 places from the mile to the finish line.
