In the first test of the fall cross country season, the BYU Cougars emerged as a unified stronghold against some of the nation's top-ranked teams at the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Friday in Springfield, Oregon.
Led by a victorious kick from Clayton Young, the Cougars scored four men in the top four spots of the race with just four seconds separating Young from fourth-place finisher and freshman star Casey Clinger. The team's fifth scorer, Daniel Carney, finished seventh to round out a winning team score of just 17 points, well ahead of runner-up Stanford's 73 points, and Oregon's 75 points.
Although Stanford and Oregon held out some of their projected top five scorers for this meet, BYU's team performance was a dominant display of depth and shows immense promise for the FloXC No. 6-ranked squad.
On the women's side, Oregon All-American Katie Rainsberger obliterated the meet record when she crossed the finish line in 18:47, a staggering 37 seconds faster than the previous record.
Along with race winner Rainsberger, Oregon notched the first three individual finishes with Lilli Burdon and Jessica Hull closing in behind her. Together, they led the Ducks to a team title with 33 points -- 30 points fewer than runner-up Stanford. BYU followed in third and Washington earned fourth-place finish.
Like the men's team, the No. 2 Stanford women didn't run everyone from their projected top five scorers, but No. 4 Oregon's team performance -- especially Rainsberger's dominating victory -- is a great sign for the defending NCAA champions.
