COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS (09-March) -- The first round of the men's and women's mile at the 2018 NCAA DI Indoor Track & Field Championships went according to form, with all the top seeds advancing to the final.

Oregon's Sam Prakel won the first section in 4:02.65, while reigning champion Josh Kerr of New Mexico won the second section in 4:02.03.

Kerr told reporters in the mixed zone after the race that he was still "unsure" about whether or not he would anchor the Lobos' distance medley relay, which is scheduled for tonight at 9:00 PM CT. The Lobos' altitude-adjusted mark of 9:24.73 not only leads the NCAA this year, but is quicker than the collegiate record.

Another notable casualty of heat 1 was Texas' true freshman Sam Worley, who placed seventh in 4:09.65. His high school rival Reed Brown of Oregon advanced from section 2.

The women's mile also saw the advancement of every top seed, including NCAA leader Elinor Purrier of New Hampshire.
