Ronnie Baker prevailed in a much-anticipated rematch with Christian Coleman at Thursday’s Rome Diamond League.

Less than a week after his Pre Classic victory, Baker posted a world-leading 9.93 in the men’s 100m to defeat the 60m world record holder and take the victory. The two were even through 70 meters before Baker pulled away. Coleman faded over the final meters, dropping to fourth place in 10.06. France’s Jimmy Vicaut and Italy’s Filippo Tortu placed second and third.

This year there’s been no match for Abderrahman Samba in the 400m hurdles. The Qatari turned in another scintillating performance, running 47.48 to best his own world lead and break the Diamond League record. The mark is the fastest time in the event since 2010 and gives him the top three performances of 2018. Karsten Warholm, last year’s world champion from Norway, ran a personal best and national record of 47.82 to finish second.

The women’s steeplechase featured an eventful final kilometer with Emma Coburn locked into a tight competition with Kenyans Hyvin Kiyeng and Celliphine Chespol. Coburn tried to go between the two Kenyans on the final water jump, but fell to the track after landing. She recovered and finished fourth in 9:08.13, the fourth best time of her career. Kiyeng outkicked Chespol for the victory, running 9:04.96 to Chespol’s 9:05.14.

In the men’s 800m, Wycliffe Kinyamal continued his breakout season, running down Ferguson Rotich in the final meters to take the victory in 1:44.64. Earlier this season Kinyamal won the Commonwealth Games and the Shanghai Diamond League meet, the latter in the second-fastest time in the world this year.

Timothy Cheruiyot ran unchallenged on his way to a 1500m victory. The Kenyan stopped the clock at 3:31.22, the fastest time of the year and more than two seconds clear of Elijah Manangoi who posted a 3:33.79.

Sharika Nelvis took the women’s 100m hurdles in 12.76. Brianna McNeal didn’t finish the race after smashing the first two hurdles. Fred Kerley took the 400m in a season’s best of 44.53, holding off a late charge from Abdalleleh Haroun who ran 44.37.

In the field, Luvo Manyonga long jumped 8.58m to edge Juan Miguel Echevarria’s 8.53m. The mark was a lifetime best for Echevarria’s and sets in motion a very interesting rest of the Diamond League season in the event. In the high jump, Mariya Lasistkene cleared 2.02m to grab the world lead back from Nafissatou Thiam.
