Where are these track stars? The athletes we have yet to see in 2019

These Track Stars Have Been MIA In 2019

Track and field athletes are notorious for seemingly falling off the map without notice, either due to injury, extended breaks, an unannounced retirement or otherwise. Coming off a year with no outdoor global championships in 2018, and immediately transitioning into this unusually long season, the number of athletes off their typical schedule was bound to be higher in 2019. In the case of Allyson Felix, who welcomed her first child last November, her extended absence was anticipated, but for others their status remains unclear.

Here are some prominent athletes that have yet to debut this summer and are not racing this weekend at Pre:

Evan Jager

Last Race: August 30, 2018

Jager has not raced at all in 2019, and him not running at Prefontaine suggests that he’s not healthy. The good news is that the winner of seven straight U.S. steeple titles doesn’t need to be 100-percent to make the team for Doha, and if he does qualify for Worlds, he’ll still have two months to get ready after USAs.

Wayde van Niekerk

Last Race: February 22, 2019

The road back from his ACL tear in November 2017 has been long as the 400m world record holder has raced just once since then, a 47.28 in late February that could generously be described as a rust-buster. The jury remains out on whether or not van Niekerk can return to his 43.03 ways, but the South African should make his Diamond League return soon.

Ryan Hill

Last Race: February 8, 2019

The Bowerman TC athlete has run Pre every season since 2014, so his absence just a month before USAs is notable. The World indoor 3k medalist ran a 13:36 indoor 5k in February but has not raced outdoors in 2019.

Ronnie Baker

Last Race: August 31, 2018

Sprinter Ronnie Baker enjoyed a breakout season in 2018, which included a bronze medal at the World indoor championships 60m and a whopping 10 wind-legal sub-10 performances. Baker also won the Pre Classic 100m and beat Christian Coleman. But the 25-year-old won’t be on the start line to defend his title and has not raced since the Diamond League finale last year.

Taoufik Makhloufi

Last Race: September 9, 2016

Algerian man of mystery Taoufik Makhloufi has not raced since 2016, but he appears to be back training, albeit here without shoes:

The 2012 Olympic 1,500m gold medalist missed the 2017 and 2018 seasons with injury. When healthy Big Makh was the most dynamic 800m/1500m talent in the world as he medaled in both distances at the Rio Olympics.

David Rudisha

Last Race: July 4, 2017

Is he retired? The 800m world record holder and back-to-back Olympic champion has reportedly been dealing with a hamstring injury, and he hasn’t raced since 2017. As such, it seems highly unlikely that the 30-year-old will be back in 2019. But not everything is lost while Rudisha is away from the track, as now he has more time for Twitter:

Boris Berian

Last Race: September 9, 2018

The out-of-nowhere star who ran 1:43 just months after flipping burgers at McDonald’s in 2015, Boris Berian arrived as a full-fledged star when he won the World indoor title less than a year later in 2016. But Berian missed all of 2017 due to a lingering Achilles injury and has popped up only intermittently ever since.

Charlene Lipsey

Last Race: September 2, 2018

Charlene Lipsey was spectacular in 2017 and 2018 as she broke 2:00 on 14 occasions and made the 800m World Championship final in London. Lipsey has yet to race indoor or out in 2019.
