In recent years, core-strengthening exercises have become a major piece of many distance runner's training programs. Frequently runners will attribute their success in races to core strength, stating that these exercises are a key part of what they do. No longer are top runners just doing sit ups and crunches after a run. A strong core is essential for athletes looking to meet their goals in our sport.

Novato High School, located just north of San Francisco in Marin County, is led by senior stand out Eric Olson. As a junior he broke 9:00 in the 3200 four times with a best time of 8:55.02. This fall Olson was victorious at Stanford and placed 5th at Mt. SAC. This past weekend he became the CIF Division 3 state champ, running 15:01 for a 15 second victory and the 3rd fastest time in any division. Olson will be racing this weekend at NXN as an individual.

After a distance run, Novato heads to the track for a combined core/speed session.
