It's No Surprise That Ashton Eaton Is The World's Best Athlete

Heading into 2015, Ashton Eaton was already the ‘Greatest Athlete in the World,’ with his 2012 Olympic Gold Medal, two World titles and a world record from the 2012 Olympic Trials.

And then 27-year-old Eaton broke his own world record to win his third world title this summer in Beijing. The build up to Beijing is what makes his performance so dang impressive.

Eaton had not contested in a full decathlon since the 2013 World Championships. He entered the 2015 Hypo-Meeting in Gotsiz, Austria but had to pull out of the competition due to injury. Because he was the reigning world champion, he did not need to compete at the U.S. Championships and instead opted to compete in singular events around the country. We saw him set a then-personal best 400m mark of 45.55 in Atlanta and a new pole vault PB of 5.40m at the FloTrack Throwdown, but Eaton was truly saving the best for last.

He ran 45.00 in the 400m to end the first day of competition and needed to run the final event, the 1500m, in 4:18.25 to break his own record. He decided to go faster and finished in 4:17.52 to accumulate 9045 points, six more than his previous record.

For his efforts, Eaton was named the USATF Male Athlete of the Year and the IAAF Male Athlete of the Year.
