Sisay Lemma dethroned Evans Chebet as the Boston Marathon men's champion on Monday during the race' 128th running of one of the world's most famous marathons. 

Chebet was attempting to win his third straight Boston Marathon, but Lemma ran the marathon in 2:06:17, edging out Mohamed Esa, who finished with a time of 2:06:58.

Lemma, 33 and from Ethiopia, ran the 10th fastest time if Boston Marathon history. Lemma ran the first half of the marathon faster than Geoffrey Mutai did in 2011 when he set the record for the fastest marathon. Mutai's record of 2:03:02 is safe again.

Lemma was the 2021 London Marathon winner. The London Marathon is on April 21.

Hellen Obiri Wins Boston Marathon For Second Year In A Row

Hellen Obiri won the women's open for the second year in a row. She becomes the first defending champion since Catherine Ndereba in 2004 and 2005. Obiri won last year with a time of 2:21:38 and finished 2024 with a time of 2:22:37. 

The 34-year-old Kenyan is a two-time Olympian and last year won the Boston and New York Marathon. 

Obiri is also a two-time Diamond League Champion.

The Boston Marathon is being broadcast on ESPN2 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The race will also be available on ESPN+ in the United States.
