Genzebe Dibaba Runs 4:14, Not A PR But The Second-Fastest Outdoor Mile Ever
At a meet in Rovereto, Italy, Genzebe Dibaba came up just short in a world-record attempt in the mile. She finished in an unofficial 4:14.30--the No. 2 outdoor mile ever, and the No. 3 mile of all time. Only Svetlana Masterkova's 4:12.56 outdoor world record from 1996 and Dibaba's 4:13.31 indoor world from February are faster, and today was only the third time ever that a woman broke 4:14.

Dibaba followed the pacers through 400m in 60.95 seconds, but slowed immediately after. She hit 609 meters in 1:36, 800m in 2:07, and passed the pacers right before the penultimate lap. Her approximate 400m splits were 61, 66, 63, 64 (409m). Complete official results are here

Sifan Hassan was second in 4:25, Alexa Efraimson was third in 4:27, and Amanda Eccleston was 12th in 4:34.
