The 2025 Tokyo Marathon will officially in the rearview. Tadese Takele surprised the men's field with a late gutsy move to take the win in 2:03:23. On the women's side, Sutume Asefa Kebede ran a dominant race, leading wire-to-wire. She collected the win in 2:16:31.

9:28 PM ET - Sutume Asefa Kebede Goes Wire-To-Wire The Win In The 2025 Tokyo Marathon

Sutume Asefa Kebede was absolutely dominant in her win at the 2025 Tokyo Marathon. She ran aggressively and crossed with the win in 2:16.31. It was her second-straight Tokyo Marathon win.

Winfridah Moraa Moseti finished in second with a 2:16:46 and Hawi Feysa finished in third with a 2:17:00.

9:14 PM ET - Tadese Takele Wins The 2025 Tokyo Marathon

Tadese Takele wins the Tokyo Marathon in 2:03:23, a personal best effort for the Ethiopian. It is also his first World Major Marathon win.

Deresa Geleta finishes in second with his 2:03:51 and Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich finishes in third with a 2:04:00.

Titus Kipruto finished fourth in 2:05:34.

9:08 PM ET - Tadese Takele Leads By A Sizable Margin

Takele has opened his lead to over 50 meters, and he is continuing to press. The race for second is on between Deresa Geleta and Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich. There is 1,000m remaining in the race.

9:03 PM ET - Tadese Takele Has Made A Strong Move

Tadese Takele and Deresa Geleta have dropped Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich following a move by Takele. They are in a line, with Geleta a couple of strides back.

Takele continues to press with 3km remaining in the race.

8:59 PM ET - Tigist Ketema May Have Dropped

Tigist Ketema was in second in the women's race, but has not recorded a split at the 30km mark. Sutume Asefa Kebede continues to lead.

8:53 PM ET - Three Men Have Broke Away

A lead trio has created a huge gap back to Birhanu Legese in fourth. Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich, Tadese Takele, and Deresa Geleta split 1:42:13 through 35km.

They lead by 37-seconds. Benson Kipruto is in fifth, a minute behind the leaders.

8:45 PM ET - Joshua Cheptegei Has Moved Up To 13th

Joshua Cheptegei has made up ground in relation to the field as a whole, however he still trails the leaders by 1:15 at 30km. He is in a group of six men, including Tsegaye Getachew who has surprisingly continued with today's race.

8:43 PM ET - Tigist Ketema Is Slipping Back To The Trail Pack

Sutume Asefa Kebede's lead is two-minutes at 25km. Tigist Ketema has started to fall back towards the trail pack. She has a 19-second advantage on a pack of six women.

8:40 PM ET - Leaders Split 1:27:22 Through 30km

The final pacer has dropped off and the leaders split 1:27:22 through 30km. There are four men in-a-line out front with Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich leading Tadese Takele, Deresa Geleta, and Birhanu Legese. Benson Kipruto is about 15-seconds back alongside Titus Kipruto.

The leaders split 14:39 over the 5k between 25k-30k. They are on pace for a 2:02 finish.

8:33 PM ET - The Lead Pack Has Broke Apart

The lead pack has strung out considerably in the last few minutes. Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich is trying to push the lead as they approach 30km. He has opened a 15-meter lead. 

Benson Kipruto has slipped to the end of this chase line, but he still looks composed.

8:26 PM ET - Sutume Asefa Kebede Splits 1:02:53 Through 20km

Kebede continues to lead the women's race. She split 1:02:53 through 20km, and was a 1:25 ahead of Tigist Ketema in second. A large chase pack, consisting of eight women has formed behind them. The chase pack is 30-seconds behind Ketema and has started to make up some ground.

8:23 PM ET - Tsegaye Getachew Pulls Up

Tsegaye Getachew unexpectedly pulled up and dropped out of the lead group at 25K. He stopped for a moment but is now moving again at a slowed pace.

A huge shake-up with under an hour remaining in today's race.

8:15 PM ET - Joshua Cheptegei Is in 25th

Joshua Cheptegei is currently positioned in 25th. He is about 52-seconds behind the leaders at the half-way mark. He has a lot of ground to make up in the latter half of this race.

Aoi Ota is fading from the lead group. Only seven runners remain in the lead group. They split 61:17 at halfway.

8:08 PM ET - The Lead Pack Merges Again

The leaders split 58:07 through 20km. The lead pack has settled into itself again and now Aoi Ota finds himself in the middle of that group. The leaders are on 2:02 pace.

In the Women's race Suteme Asefa Kebede continues to lead. Her advantage is now over one minute. Tigist Ketema has built a 28-second lead on Rosemary Wanjiru and Gotytom Gebreslase in third and fourth.

8:03 PM ET - Geleta Joins Ota At The Front

Deresa Geleta has joined Ota and the three pacers at the front of the pack. They have opened a 20-meter gap on the rest of the field.

Of note, Joshua Cheptegei is still in the chasing pack about 40-seconds back. 

7:58 PM ET - Aoi Ota Is Pushing the Pace

Aoi Ota, a 22-year-old Japanese college student, is pressing the pacers to go quicker. The lead pack is starting to separate due to the pressure from Ota.

It is his marathon debut.

7:54 PM ET - 43:29 Through 15K

The lead men come through the first 15,000m in 43:29. There are now eight men in the lead group. 

The trail pack is about 41-seconds behind and the predicted finish time for the leaders is approaching 2:03.

Early on, the pace has slipped slightly and they are a tick behind course record pace.

7:50 PM ET - Sutume Asefa Is Dominant Early

Suteme Asefa Kebede is dominating the early parts of the women's race. She split 31:22 through 10,000m and was about 42 seconds ahead of the trail pack at that point. Tigist Ketema and Hawi Feysa trail Kebede in their own pack of two.

7:47 PM ET - Comfortably Aggressive Pace In The Front

Vincent Yegon and Tatsuya Tsunashima continue to manage the pace early. The pace setters have kept the pace honest. Benson Kipruto, the defending Tokyo Marathon Champion, is in the lead pack.

Other runners in the lead group include Aoi Ota, Ismael Kiprono, Shadrack Kimining, Deresa Geleta, Tadese Takele, Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich, Tsegaye Getachew, Birhanu Legese and Titus Kipruto.

7:39 PM ET - 10K Men's Split

The first group of men come through 10k in 28:55. The chase pack is about 20 seconds back. Joshua Cheptegei, the world record holder in the 5,000m and 10,000m, is in the chase pack. The second 5,000m was about a 14:30.

7:34 PM ET - Lead Women Split 15:35 Through The Opening 5k

Defending champion, Suteme Asefa Kebede leads the women through an opening 5K of 15:35. She already has a 34 second lead on the the rest of the field. Tigist Ketema leads the trail pack.

7:25 PM ET - Lead Men Split 14:24 Opening 5K

The lead men split 14:24 through the opening 5,000m of the race. There are 12 men in the lead pack, followed by a 15-second gap back to the chase pack.

7:10 PM ET - The 2025 Tokyo Marathon Is Underway

The 2025 Tokyo Marathon is officially underway and elite runners are on the course. There is some separation between the two elite groups. There are 30 or 40 runners in the top group.

7:05 PM ET - Wheelchair Athletes Begin Their Race

Wheelchair athletes get underway shortly after 7:00 PM ET, and the world's top athletes prepare to toe the line shortly thereafter.

Who Are The Favorites?

Joshua Cheptegei made his marathon debut in Valencia in 2023, but shifted his focus back to shorter races for the Olympic year. He won the 10,000m at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Tokyo Marathon will be Cheptegei's first honest effort at the distance. He'll look to follow the lead of Benson Kipruto.

Benson Kipruto returns as the defending race champion. He ran 2:02:16 at the 2024 rendition of the race, which was a course record. He then went on to finish third at the 2024 Paris Olympic Marathon.

On the women's side of things, Sutume Asefa Kebede is the reigning champion. She will return after running a Tokyo Marathon record of 2:15:55. Tigist Ketema will also toe the line after winning the Berlin Marathon in 2024.
