How These Athletes Can Earn A Spot In The Diamond League Final

What Do These Field Event Athletes Need To Do In Silesia For A Spot In The Diamond League Final?
With just 3 Diamond League meetings remaining until the final in Zurich on on August 27-28th, opportunities to qualify for a spot in the final are rapidly dwindling down. And with the Tokyo World Athletics Championships taking place after the conclusion of the Diamond League final for the first time, earning a spot in the final has become all the more significant.

This is because, per World Athletics, athletes can now earn entry into the World Championships through a Wild Card by winning the Diamond League final in their respective event. But before they can have a shot at that Wild Card, their first hurdle is guarantee their spot in the Diamond League Final.
Here are 3 Field Event athletes who are on the cusp of reaching the Diamond League Final who need to perform well in Silesia to guarantee their spot.
Jasmine Moore – Women’s Long Jump
Sitting in 5th place with 11 points as we head into Silesia, Jasmine Moore is all but guaranteed a spot in the final, barring a tremendous performance from one of the jumpers ranked beneath her. And while she has already earned her spot on the Tokyo World Championship team in the triple jump, she failed to make the team in the long jump at the USATF Championships early this month.
By competing in the long jump final in Zurich, and then winning, the Paris Olympic double-medalist can become jumper number 4 on the US roster to Tokyo alongside Tara Davis-Woodhall, Claire Bryant, and Quanesha Burks.
Sam Kendricks – Men’s Pole Vault
Though he’s already earned his spot on the World Championship team, Sam Kendricks still needs a solid performance in Silesia to guarantee his spot in the Diamond League final. He is currently in 6th in the Diamond League rankings, and barring any change in his ranking after Silesia, he will make his appearance in Zurich.
The most significant threat to his current position comes from Ersu Sasma, who is also listed to compete, and currently ranked in 8th in the standings with 10 points. Kendricks looks to be a sure bet for Zurich, but this is one event to keep an eye out for, as a poor performance from Kendricks could leave the door open for Sasma, bumping him out of the final.
Monae’ Nichols – Women’s Long Jump
Three US women long jumpers are already ranked in the top 6 of the Diamond League standings, and are all but secured to reach the final. Monae’ Nichols, the 4th ranked US jumper out of 5 in the standings, is currently ranked 8th with a current total of 5 points.
Here’s what makes the Silesia women’s long jump one to watch: positions 6 through 9 in the current standings heading into the meeting are separated by just 2 points. This means that by finishing ahead of Hillary Kpatcha, the only jumper slated to compete in Silesia who is ranked ahead of her, Nichols can secure her spot in the final. However, she must also defeat Lex Brown and Ackelia Smith, who are 1 and 2 points behind her in the standings respectively.
