Exactly two weeks removed from her runner-up finish at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships, BYU freshman superstar Jane Hedengren added a collegiate 5K record to her legacy.

At the 2025 BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, the freshman phenom shattered Doris Lemngole's (Alabama) NCAA 5000m indoor record of 14:52.57, running 14:44.79 to become the first collegian to ever break 14:50 indoors or outdoors.

Hedengren also broke Parker Valby's all-time collegiate record of 14:52.18, which Valby set at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

After she and familiar face Pamela Kosgei (New Mexico) built a 10-second lead over the rest of the field, it wasn't too long after that Hedengren began pressing the pace more and more, ultimately dropping the defending NCAA Outdoor 5k and 10k champion and turning her attention to the clock.

Lap by lap, it became clearer that Hedengren was not just on pace for something fast, instead something historic and unprecedented.

With the crowd on their feet and the adrenaline pumping, Hedengren closed her last 1k in 2:49.75 as she won by 14 seconds and became the second-fastest American indoors in history, trailing Elise Cranny, who ran 14:33.17 on the same track in 2022.

Following her first collegiate track race, Hedengren now sits No. 11 indoors in world history and No. 2 all-time among the U20 ranks.
