The Marathon Project Returns: Women's Marathon Preview & Athletes to Watch

The Marathon Project returns this weekend, marking its first edition since 2020, when the event was staged amid the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s race promises to be something entirely different. More than just a marathon, The Marathon Project aims to deliver a full-scale experience—one that prioritizes both elite performance and fan engagement.

Athletes will receive world-class treatment, while fans can expect vibrant spectator zones featuring music, food trucks, beer, and more. Pair that atmosphere with a fast, unique course in Chandler, Arizona, and the stage is set for an exciting women’s race.

Kellyn Taylor Leads the Field

American Kellyn Taylor headlines the women’s field with a personal best of 2:24:29. Known for her consistency, Taylor made her marathon debut a decade ago at the Chevron Houston Marathon, where she ran 2:28:40—then the sixth-fastest time by an American woman. With the return of a fast course and ideal racing conditions, Taylor enters the weekend firmly on personal-best watch.

Paige Wood Brings Course Experience

Paige Wood sits second on the entry list with a personal best of 2:26:02. She raced this same course in 2020, giving her valuable familiarity that could pay dividends this time around. Unlike that pandemic-era edition, Wood will benefit from a lively race environment with fans lining the course—an advantage that could make a difference late in the race.

Blanka Dörfel: A Debut to Watch

Blanka Dörfel is one of the most intriguing names in the field. The 23-year-old German standout will be making her marathon debut at The Marathon Project. She brings impressive credentials, including a 31:10 road 10K and a 1:09:46 half marathon personal best. Dörfel has been preparing at altitude in Boulder, Colorado, and could emerge as a serious factor if she handles the step up to 26.2 miles.

With elite talent, a fast course, and an energized fan experience, The Marathon Project’s return promises to be a memorable one. The professional women’s race will stream live on FloTrack on Sunday, December 21.
