Jakob Ingebrigtsen Wins 2026 European Championships 5000m Title In First Race Since Surgery

Jakob Ingebrigtsen returns from surgery to win the 2026 European 5000m title in Birmingham in his first race in 11 months.

In his first race in 11 months, Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the European 5000m title on Aug. 10 in Birmingham, UK, running 13:15.29 to earn his fourth consecutive European title in the event.

The race was Ingebrigtsen’s first competition of the 2026 season, following a left Achilles tendon surgery in February.

Ingebrigtsen stayed toward the back of the pack for much of the race before moving into contention with 600 meters remaining. He then used his trademark finishing speed to move through a gap in the final 100 meters and pull away for the win.

With his first race behind him, the Norwegian now turns his attention to building toward the rest of the 2026 season. Ingebrigtsen is scheduled to race at the Silesia Diamond League meet on August 23 and Zurich Diamond League meet on August 27, both LIVE on FloTrack.
