After a one-month break, Diamond League action returned with back-to-back meetings in Lausanne and Silesia. Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Cole Hocker headlined a star-studded 1500m in Silesia, Mykolas Alekna broke his own Diamond League record, and Yomif Kejelcha reclaimed the half marathon world record.

5. Tsige Duguma Runs 1500m World Lead of 3:55.06 

We’ve seen several athletes successfully transition to new events this season, from Rai Benjamin to Femke Bol, and Tsige Duguma is quickly emerging as another.

The 800m Olympic silver medalist began exploring the 1500m this year. She made her outdoor 1500m debut at the Shanghai/Keqiao Diamond League meeting in May, clocking 3:55.71 for the second fastest time of the year at the time.

Duguma contested the 1500 again in Silesia and delivered yet another strong performance. Sitting in sixth with 200m remaining, Duguma seemingly came out of nowhere to storm past Jessica Hull and Dorcus Ewo on the final stretch. She finished with a world-leading personal best of 3:55.06.

4. Mykolas Alekna Shatters Discus Diamond League Record, Throwing 72.58m

After suffering his first loss of the season last week at the European Championships, discus world record holder Mykolas Alekna arrived in Silesia ready for redemption. 

Alekna had himself a day in the Silesian stadium, surpassing 71 meters on each of his first three attempts, recording marks of 71.03m, 71.67m, and 71.27m. After a foul on the fourth attempt, Alekna unleashed a 72.58m throw.

This mark broke his own Diamond League record of 71.70m, which was set last year in London. He also took down the Silesia meeting record of 68.60m, which had stood for 13 years. 

3. Alison dos Santos Runs 6th-Fastest 400m Hurdles Time In History

Alison dos Santos has been on an absolute tear this season, winning his last eight races in a row.

In Silesia, dos Santos faced world record holder Karsten Warholm for the first time since June. The two remained nearly even throughout the race, but it was dos Santos who ultimately pulled ahead to secure the win in a world-leading time of 46.43.

The performance was the second-fastest of dos Santos’ career and the sixth-fastest in history. Dos Santos, Warholm and Rai Benjamin now each own two of the six fastest performances ever recorded in the event.

2. Yomif Kejelcha Reclaims Half Marathon World Record By 29 Seconds

Across the Atlantic, Yomif Kejelcha made history at the Media Marathon Ciudad de Buenos Aires.

Back in 2024, Yomif Kejelcha broke the half marathon world record with a time of 57:30. Jacob Kiplimo went on to lower that record to 57:20 in Lisbon this March.

Kejelcha responded emphatically in Buenos Aires, clocking 56:51 to reclaim the world record. He took 29 seconds off Kiplimo’s world record, which was still in the process of being ratified.

This historic run adds to an extraordinary year for Kejelcha. In April, he ran 1:59.41 at the London Marathon, becoming the second-fastest marathoner of all-time. His time is even more impressive considering this was his marathon debut.

1. Ethan Strand Upsets Ingebrigtsen and Hocker, Claiming 1500m Win in Silesia

All eyes were on the Men’s 1500m in Silesia as Jakob Ingebrigtsen made his return to the distance for the first time since the 2025 World Championships. 

Much of the attention centered on the anticipated showdown between Ingebrigtsen and reigning Olympic champion Cole Hocker, with the two expected to battle for the win. Ethan Strand, however, had other plans.

Strand maintained strong positioning throughout the loaded race, reaching the bell lap in sixth. With 150m remaining, the American unleashed his signature kick and separated himself from the field, earning one of the biggest professional victories of his career in a season’s best of 3:30.77.

After excelling on the NCAA stage, Strand is quickly establishing himself on the professional circuit and is proving he can compete with the likes of Olympic and World Champions.

Strand will face Ingebrigtsen and Hocker again in the Zurich Diamond League 1500m, with Yared Nuguse joining the loaded field.
