The Diamond League Standings Are Qualifiers For The Diamond League Final.

The Diamond League standings determine who qualifies for the Diamond League Final in Brussels. 

Athletes who finish towards the stop of the standings in their discipline qualify for the Final. For competitions such as the men’s 100m, the top eight qualify. For others like the men' s 1500m, the top 10 qualify.

Showing consistency throughout the Diamond League season and building up points are important to ensure that a competitor will qualify and have the chance to win Gold at the Diamond League Final.

How Are Points Awarded In The Diamond League Standings?

Points are ultimately what determines the Diamond League standings. The athlete with the most points accumulated throughout the season will be at the top of the standings for their discipline.

So how are points earned?

Points are awarded through results at Diamond League meetings. Athletes are awarded between 8 to 1 points depending on where they place in an event. Athletes who finish in first receive 8 points, in second receive 7 points and so on.

If an athlete competes in more Diamond League events and finishes in a consistently high placement, they’ll likely finish near the top of the standings for their discipline.

Are The Diamond League Standings The Only Way To Qualify For The Diamond League Final?

While qualifying through the Diamond League standings is the primary way to make the Diamond League Final, it’s not the only way.

Meeting organizers can invite up to four Global Wild Cards (two men, two women) to compete in Brussels. However, these athletes have to fulfill one of these criteria in order to be eligible:

• World record holder
• Reigning world, Olympic or Diamond League champion
• Top 5 in the World Athletics rankings of their event
• Top 20 in the overall World Athletics rankings

Jakob Ingebrigtsen has already been announced as a Wild Card in the men’s 1500m and 5000m in Brussels.

There’s also National Wild Cards for each discipline. The host country can invite one National Wild Card to compete in the Final.

The 2026 Final is being hosted in Belgium, meaning one Belgian athlete may be invited to compete.
