Jessica Schilder surpassed 21 meters at the first Diamond League Meeting in Shanghai/Keqiao on May 16, where she threw a huge 40 cm personal best and Dutch National Record of 21.09m. Schilder’s throw also broke the previous Diamond League Record, which stood at 21.03m set in 2012 by Valerie Adams.
Adams’ record throw was the last time a female shot putter threw above 21 meters, establishing Schilder as the first woman to throw over 21 meters in 14 years.
It was not long before another athlete joined Schilder in the 21-meter club. Chase Jackson has come incredibly close to 21 meters in recent years, with three throws above 20.90m in 2025 and a season’s best of 20.92m in 2026.
On August 30, Jackson finally broke through at the Continental Tour: ISTAF Berlin meeting. On her first throw, Jackson launched the shot 21.02 meters, improving on her previous American record of 20.95m.
This is a significant moment in shot put history, as it marks the first time two women have surpassed 21 meters in the same year since 1990, when Chinese compatriots Zhihong Huang and Xinmei Sui threw 21.52m and 21.66m, respectively.
Jackson and Schilder will go head-to-head next at the Diamond League Finals in Brussels on September 4.
They have faced off 44 times in their careers, with Jackson leading 31-13. Both athletes have impressive resumes: Jackson is a three-time world record holder, two-time Diamond League Champion, and eleven-time national champion, while Schilder is the reigning world champion, Diamond League champion, and fifteen-time national champion.
The Diamond League Final Women’s Shot Put will begin at 12:30 PM ET on September 4, 2026.
