Mondo Duplantis won the men’s pole vault at the World Ultimate Championships, clearing 6.20m before narrowly missing a world-record attempt at 6.32m.

Mondo Duplantis saved one of the biggest moments for last, closing out Day 1 at the World Ultimate Championships with another pole vault victory in Budapest.

After pulling out of the Diamond League Final last week due to injury, Duplantis returned to competition and cleared 6.20m to take the title, finishing ahead of Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis at 6.15m.

With the competition already won, Duplantis took a shot at something even bigger, raising the bar to 6.32m in an attempt to break his own world record.

The record attempt ultimately came up short, but Duplantis still ended the opening day on top as the men’s pole vault provided a fitting finale in Budapest.
