Nairobi and Munich will host the 2029 and 2031 World Championships, bringing the event to Africa for the first time and back to Germany for the third time.

World Athletics has selected Nairobi and Munich as the host cities for the 2029 and 2031 World Championships.

The selection of Nairobi marks the first time the global championship will be held in Africa. World Athletics backed its decision due to Kenya's experience hosting international events, fan research indicating high interest in athletics, and its rank as the second-highest-performing nation in the history of the World Athletics Championships 

The event, to be held at Kasarani Stadium in September 2029, previously hosted the World U18 Championships and is currently undergoing renovations in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027 and the World Championships in 2029. The stadium sits 5,289 feet above sea level, compared to 92 feet at last year's World Championships in Tokyo, which could present a unique challenge for athletes accustomed to competing at sea level.

Two years later, the World Championships will return to Germany for the third time in the event's history and first since Berlin hosted in 2009. Like Nairobi, Munich emerged as a strong candidate to host the global event due to its extensive experience hosting international events and the public's enthusiasm for the sport.  The city also emphasized its sustainability efforts, an increasingly important consideration in World Athletics' planning of global championships.

The 2031 edition will be held at Munich Olympiapark, which hosted the 1972 Munich Olympics as well as the 2002 and 2022 European Championships.

The next World Championships will take place September 11-19, 2027 in Beijing.
