The 2026 BMW Berlin Marathon has the makings of what could be a historic 52nd edition with world-class fields and perfect weather on deck this weekend.

The 52nd edition of the BMW Berlin Marathon is less than 48 hours from commencing, and the elite fields are jam-packed with world-class talent from top to bottom.

The forecast calls for an overcast sky and temperatures in the low 50s when the gun goes off, setting the stage for what has the makings of a historic race.

While over 56,000 runners make their way through the streets of Berlin for 26.2 miles, the best marathoners in the world will be at the front jockeying for a World Marathon Major title.

Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa Looks To Hold Off Field In World Record Attempt

Tigst Assefa, the former world record holder, is returning to Berlin this weekend with aspirations of rewriting history and lowering Ruth Chepngetich's (KEN) current record of 2:09:56.

The Ethiopian phenom has just one race to her name this year, a 2:15:41 showing from April at the TCS London Marathon, in which she shattered the women-only world record and defended her title from 2025 over an absolutely loaded field.

The field in Berlin will be just as historic, if not more, as she'll have her work cut out for her in her pursuit of history. Kenya's Rosemary Wanjiru is the next-fastest entrant behind the favorite, stepping to the line with a 2:16:14 PB. Similar to a lot of the field, Wanjiru hasn't raced a ton this year, with her lone run being an 11th-place finish at the Tokyo Marathon, where she was over 10 minutes back of countrywoman Brigid Kosgei, who won in 2:14:29.

A pack of six Ethiopian women rounds out the rest of the entrants with sub-2:20 performances in their back pocket, as Bedatu Hirpa (2:18:27), Dera Dida (2:18:32), Zeineba Yimer (2:18:47), Bosena Mulatie (2:19:00), Misgane Alemayehu (2:19:08), and Bekelech Gudeta (2:19:39) all hope to shave quite a bit off their PBs and add to Ethiopia's historic legacy at the distance.

Fourteen more women in the field have run 2:25 or quicker, setting the stage for what has the chance to be the fastest marathon of all time.

Gabriel Geay & Historic Field Putting Field Eliud Kipchoge's Course Record In Jeopardy

Even without reigning champion Sebastian Sawe, the men's field looks capable of challenging Eliud Kipchoge's four-year-old course record of 2:01:09.

Tanzania's Gabriel Geay sits atop the list of nearly a dozen contenders and, on paper, has a 34-second lead on the rest of the field thanks to a 2:03:00 PB from 2022.

Just like their female counterparts, a contingent of Ethiopian men looks increasingly formidable, with eight of the next nine fastest entrants representing the green, yellow, red, and blue.

Getaneh Molla (2:03:34) is the fastest of the bunch and is six months removed from a runner-up finish in Seoul, Korea, where he crossed in 2:04:23.

Guye Adola, Shura Kitata, and Dejene Hailu all enter with impressive performances already this year, with Adola running 2:03:54 in Amsterdam, Kitata dropping a 2:03:59 in Zurich, and Hailu notching a third-place finish in Zurich in 2:04:15.

Americans Set To Leave Their Mark

Adola is the top returner from last year's blistering race, with Sawe, Akira Akasaki, and Chimdessa Debele not racing this weekend.

There are a handful of Americans taking their talents to Germany, including Jacqueline Gaughan, Kodi Kleven, Allie Kieffer, Maya Weigel, and Rebecca Schmitt on the women's side, and Will Nation, Charlie Sweeney, and Lars Dewall for the men.

When Is The 2026 BMW Berlin Marathon?

The 2026 BMW Berlin Marathon takes place on Sunday, Sept. 27. For viewers in the United States, the race starts at 2:30 a.m. ET. In Berlin, the starting gun goes off at 8:30 a.m. local time.
