Jacob Kiplimo, at just 25-years-old, has had one of the best seasons in running history - and on Sunday, he could cap that off with a win and World Record at the 2026 Chicago Marathon.

Kiplimo currently holds a personal best of 2:00:28 over the full marathon distance, and he also has the half marathon World Record of 57:20 to his name - but more on that soon.

The Ugandan has had an unbelievable season so far in 2026. It all started at the 2026 World XC Championships where Kiplimo collected his third World XC Title in-a-row. He gapped Berihu Aregawi to win by 18-seconds in a statement victory.

Kiplimo then headed to Portugal in March. At the Lisbon Half Marathon, the young star set a World Record in the Half Marathon by posting a 57:20 for a 48-second victory.

Just over a month later, Kiplimo ran the 2026 London Marathon. In just his third race at the distance he finished third with an astounding 2:00:28. That race saw Sabastian Sawe and Yomif Kejelcha run the two fastest times in World History.

But now - it may be Kiplimo's opportunity to raise the laurels in the Windy City.

It will be his first race since London - and the only thing holding him back may be the weather.

Conditions are expected to be a little warmer than expected for a mid-October race. Currently, temperatures are calling for Mid-60's, climbing up to the high 60's by the projected finish time around 9:30 AM. Humidity expected to be in the 50% to 60% range.

These conditions are outside of the optimal ranges for marathon running - but Kiplimo can certainly still prevail.

Kiplimo's Competition At The 2026 Chicago Marathon

Amos Kipruto will stand as one of the toughest competitors in Sunday's field. Of Kenya, the 34 year old ran 2:01:39 to finish fourth behind Kiplimo at the 2026 London Marathon.

Kipruto has been a consistent contender on the World Major Marathon circuit this decade. He won London in 2022 and has sat on five World Major Podiums.

He is on a hot-streak in Chicago too. In 2024 his 2:04:50 earned him a third-place finish. Then in 2025 he upgraded to silver with a 2:03:54 effort.

Ethiopia's Milkesa Mengesha and Tadese Takele Bikila will also be in the mix. They both sport personal bests in the low-2:03's.

You also can't count out the Americans. Tough conditions could open the race up for Charles Hicks, Vinny Mauri, or Clayton Young. All will be gunning for the American Record of 2:04:43, which could spell an opportunity for an American to dip into the 2:03's.
