Shalane Flanagan Sets Road 10K American Record
Shalane Flanagan celebrates with teammate Emily Infeld after Infeld won bronze in the World Championship 10,000m
Shalane Flanagan finished 2nd today at the Tilburg 10K in the Netherlands in 31:03, a new American record. The 34-year-old Flanagan broke Lynn Jennings’ 31:06 record which had stood for 25 years.
Flanagan was 6th in the World Championships 10,000m on August 24th, her highest finish ever in a World Championship final. She now owns both the 10,000m (30:22) and 10K American records. Flanagan won the bronze medal in the 2008 Olympic Games 10,000m, the same race that she set the U.S. record.
The three-time Olympian will look to make her fourth team this February in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Los Angeles. Flanagan won the 2012 Trials Marathon in Houston, and finished 10th in the London Olympic Marathon in 2:25:51.
