FloAwards: Chicago Marathon Surprises, Beer Mile Record Goes Down

From the Chicago Marathon to the Clovis Invitational in California, runners from numerous levels dominated in their respective events this past weekend. Check out the performances that made the biggest headlines for this week’s FloAwards:

Dickson Chumba

The Kenyan won his second major marathon on Sunday in Chicago with a dominating win over Sammy Kitwara in a time of 2:09:25. Kitwara followed in 2:09:50 to claim the first non-paced 1-2 finish at the Chicago Marathon. The top pack, which also included Sammy Ngungu, Girmay Gebru and Abera Kuma, threw down a 4:32 mile split just before the 20-mile mark. It would ultimately be Chumba to break away from the pack at the 23-mile mark where he established a 10-second lead over Kitwara that led him into the finish line. Chumba’s victory marks his second major marathon title after claiming the 2014 Tokyo Marathon win.

Florence Kiplagat

Despite the lack of pacers, the women’s race at the Chicago Marathon was won in a fast pace by Florence Kiplagat who broke the finish tape in 2:23:33, 10 seconds faster than runner-up Yebrgual Melese. Although the performance was four minutes off of her personal best of 2:19:44, Kiplagat’s race tactics showed real promise as the Kenyan marathoner utilized her 65:09 half marathon speed to establish a six-second lead on Melese at 40K. From then on, she never looked back, and ran into a flawless photo finish.

Luke Puskedra

In one of the most notable marathon comebacks to date, Luke Puskedra finished fifth overall at the Chicago Marathon in a five-minute personal best of 2:10:24. After a year of ups and downs with the sport, which included nearly quitting all together, the former Nike Oregon Project runner has found a renewed outlook on running and the results are showing.

Deena Kastor

In her fastest marathon since 2009, 42-year-old Deena Kastor smashed the U.S. Masters Record with a 2:27:47 finishing time at the Chicago Marathon. The 2004 Olympic Bronze medalist finished seventh overall in the Windy City, and broke Colleen De Reuck’s previous record of 2:28:40. Not only does Kastor’s performance break age and time barriers, but also establishes her as a legitimate contender for the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials in February.

Corey Gallagher

The FloTrack Beer Mile World Champion ran a 4:54 beer mile on Saturday at the University of Manitoba, which, if ratified by BeerMile.com could potentially stand as a new beer mile world record. Gallagher’s time breaks Lewis Kent’s record of 4:55, which he ran in August in his native Canada. Gallagher, a Canadian mail carrier, submitted a video of his performance, including a separate video of his lap and beer-chugging splits:

Destiny Collins (Great Oak High School)

After a long summer of track competition that included running at the World Youth Championships, Destiny Collins returned to form on the cross country course with a dominating win at the Clovis Invitational. The Great Oak standout claimed the victory in Clovis in a winning time of 17:36. The performance also helped her Great Oak squad claim the team victory with 34 points over runner-up Arcadia’s 100 points.

Phillip Rocha (Arcadia High School)

The Arcadia standout kept his undefeated streak going this weekend with another victory at the Clovis Invitational on Saturday. Rocha claimed his third sub-15 minute performance this year with a 14:58 victory over Eduardo Herrera of Madera South High School.
