FloAwards: The Power of the Colorado Program Sweep

In the wake of the nine NCAA Regional Championships that went down across the country last Friday, the FloTrack staff has picked their top performances for this week’s FloAwards.

Flo Team

Colorado Women
The No. 2 Colorado Buffaloes executed an exciting victory at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships on Friday against No. 1 New Mexico with just one point separating the two teams. The women of Colorado continued their winning streak after claiming the Pac-12 title two weeks ago by beating New Mexico 49 points to the Lobos’ 50 point total. The men also claimed the region title, marking the second-consecutive winning sweep for the men’s and women’s programs this season.

Louisville Men
In a huge upset victory, the Louisville Cardinal men’s team captured the program’s first ever NCAA Southeast Region Championship. After finishing 11th at the NCAA Pre-National meet in October, expectations were relativity low for the squad, but the Cardinal was able to turn the tables on Friday as the team racked up 77 points, 19 points lower than runner-up Virginia. Led by a third-place finish from Edwin Kibichiy, Louisville earned an automatic qualifying spot to the NCAA Championships this Saturday, which will take place on their home course.

Oklahoma State Women
The Cowgirls of Oklahoma State also continued their winning streak on Friday with an NCAA Midwest Region title over ranked teams Iowa State and Minnesota. After winning the Big 12 Championships two weeks ago, Oklahoma State took the Midwest region with 51 points, just four points lower than the runner-up Cyclones. The victory also marked the Cowgirls’ first region victory since 2005.

Flo Performer

Hannah Everson (Air Force)
The senior from the Air Force Academy ran away with the win at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, capturing the victory in an extremely competitive field that included both the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country. Everson claimed the individual title against Kaitlyn Benner of Colorado and her teammate Erin Clark. The victory earned her an automatic qualifying spot to the NCAA Championships on Saturday, marking the first Academy runner to represent the program since 2001. She will be followed by her two teammates Kyle Eller and Patrick Corona who finished third and fourth in their respective races.

Chelsea Blaase (Tennessee)
The All American left nothing to chance last Friday as she captured her first ever NCAA regional title at the NCAA South Region Championships in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Blaase’s performance earned her an individual automatic spot to the Big Dance on Saturday where she will look to improve upon her 10th-place finish from last year’s championships.

Patrick Tiernan (Villanova)
Villanova’s front-runner ran the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championships in classic Tiernan style, breaking away from the front pack and winning all by himself with more than 25 seconds to spare. Tiernan’s individual title marks his second-consecutive NCAA region title, his fifth consecutive win this season, which adds up to 10 career wins total. He will be joined at the Big Dance by teammates Rob Denault and Jordy Williamz who finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Flo Elite

Molly Huddle
Molly Huddle, the queen of the roads continued her reign Sunday at the .US 12K Championships where she claimed the victory on the streets of Alexandria, Virginia in a winning time of 38:26. The victory marked her third consecutive .US 12K win and her 21st USATF title of her career. Huddle has collected six national titles this year alone. Not only was the win just another one of many, but it was also won in a whopping 26 seconds faster than runner-up Sara Hall.

Sam Chelanga
Chelanga’s win at the .US 12K Championships was won in an exciting dash to the finish between Tyler Pennel. Chelanga was able to out-lean Pennel for a winning time of 34:35, just a fraction of a second faster than Pennel. The slower pace proved beneficial for Chelanga who bided his time until the very end, when he was able to utilize a burst of energy to out-kick his competitors for the victory and $20,000 winning prize.

Flo Frosh

Allie Ostrander (Boise State)
Ostrander has been a mainstay to the Boise State squad, the NCAA title race, and frankly, these FloAward honors as the freshman just keeps winning every race she enters. Ostrander continued her winning streak Friday at the competitive NCAA West Region Championships with the victory in a winning time of 20:10 in sloppy, muddy conditions in Seattle. Ostrander was a full 22 seconds ahead of runner-up Waverly Neer of Oregon, and helped lead her team to a runner-up finish and automatic qualifying spot to the NCAA Championships.

Anna Rohrer (Notre Dame)
The Notre Dame 1-2 punch remained strong on Friday as Rohrer and her teammate Molly Seidel claimed the individual and runner-up finishes at the NCAA Great Lakes Region Championships. The finish was a repeat of the duo’s ACC Championship performance just two weeks earlier. On Friday, NCAA Champion Seidel led her teammate Rohrer with a winning time of 20:04 while the freshman followed in 20:18.

Jonah Koech (UTEP)
Another 1-2 punch remained strong 1,000 miles away as UTEP’s Jonah Koech and Anthony Rotich claimed the individual and runner-up finishes at the NCAA Mountain Region Championship. Koech and Rotich finished together in a time of 29:57 over the 10K course in Albuquerque. The duo’s performance helped UTEP finish second as a team and earn an automatic qualifying spot to the NCAA Championships with 77 points total.
