Wayde Van Niekerk Wins Third Consecutive Global 400m Title In 43.98

The world-record holder Wayde van Niekerk came through in the men's 400m final at the IAAF World Championships in London on Tuesday with a third global title in 43.98.

With van Niekerk's biggest rival in Isaac Makwala being quarantined by the IAAF from the 400m final due to food poisoning, the race was his to lose. The South African came through big time, making the championship run look easy with room to coast to the line in the final 50 meters.

Though it seemed that van Niekerk was in a race of his own in the final 100 meters, the race for the minor medals was more intense as Steven Gardiner -- fresh off his Bahamian National Record in the prelims -- edged out Adbalelah Haroun of Qatar for the silver medal, with Haroun settling for bronze in a season's best time.

The lone American in the final -- Fred Kerley -- got out strong in lane two but ultimately faded in the final 200m to finish last in 45.23.
