Habtom Samuel Sets NCAA Outdoor 5K Record At Bryan Clay Invitational 2025
Habtom Samuel ran 13:05.87 to win the 2025 Bryan Clay Invitational 5,000m. In doing so, he set the NCAA Outdoor Record.
A couple of weeks ago, Habtom Samuel played the bridesmaid to his teammate Ishmael Kipkurui who broke the NCAA 10K Record At The Ten.
Samuel, finished second and ended up with the second fastest time in NCAA history.
On Thursday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational, Habtom Samuel reversed the tides. Samuel ran 13:05.87 to win the top section of the 5,000m and make NCAA History.

His mark is the fastest time in NCAA Outdoor History and slots in as the fifth fastest time all-conditions. Ironically, Ishmael Kipkurui finished second tonight in 13:09.24.
The previous NCAA Outdoor record belonged to Abdihamid Nur (Northern Arizona). At the 2022 Sound Running Track Meet, Nur ran 13:06.32 for fourth.
Tonight, Samuel positioned himself in third in the early portions of the race. He made a move to the lead with a metric mile remaining and never looked back.
Kipkurui tried to cover the move but he couldn't quite match the closing speed of his teammate. Samuel split a 2:01.34 last 800m.
He now has two of the top five fastest times in NCAA All-Conditions History. He also owns the fourth fastest time in NCAA history.
Back at the BU Terrier Classic in February, Habtom ran 13:04.92 on the indoor circuit.
