Conner Mantz Fourth At The 2025 Boston Marathon, Nearly Breaks Record
Conner Mantz finished fourth at the 2025 Boston Marathon and nearly broke Ryan Hall's American Course Record.

Conner Mantz put himself in the fight at the 2025 Boston Marathon and ran one of the grittiest races we've seen an American run in a very long time.
Often, he could be spotted in the lead and eventually he finished fourth overall, narrowly missing a podium spot with his 2:05:08 finish.

He also narrowly missed a finish that Americans have been chasing since 2011... Ryan Hall's American Course Record.
In 2011, Ryan Hall ran 2:04:58, 40 seconds faster than the American Record. However, the mark is ineligible for records due to the downhill elevation loss from start-to-finish of the Boston Marathon course. The start line is also more than 50% of the race distance from the finish line which deems the course ineligible for records.
So, when Conner Mantz ran 2:05:08, he too ran faster than Khalid Khannouchi's American Record of 2:05:38 from 2002. In fact, Conner Mantz's time is the second fastest all-conditions marathon in American history.
Mantz found himself in the lead pack late. He and Patrick Tiernan repetitively exchanged the lead over the first 19-miles of the race. But then, just before the 20-mile mark, John Korir made his move.
It would wind up being a race-winning move as Korir roared his way down Bolyston Street six miles later. The pack of 13 men behind him disintegrated and before long, three men remained in chase..
Alphonce Felix Simbu, Cybrian Kotut, and Conner Mantz.
Time after time, Mantz tried to surge to close the gap to Korir and break the runners around him.
"The first time [I surged] it was because I was trying to close that gap. I thought I was closing it" Mantz told FloTrack in the mixed zone. "Then we hit the headwind... eventually I was just trying to throw in surges to break the pack it up. Its just hard. That's a good group of athletes right there and so I couldn't break it up too much."
Mantz would eventually finish fourth. Simbu came home in second with his 2:05:04 and Cybrian Kotut danced across the line with him in stride, also running 2:05:04.
Kotut spoke with FloTrack about Mantz in the mixed zone following the race.
"I knew he's a very strong athlete, especially strong minded" Kotut said. "I knew he would not just give in like that... so in my mind I said wait for a few meters so that we contend."
Mantz has built quite the reputation, not just in North America but also abroad. Those who have competed with him know him as a gritty talent, willing to put it all on the line for a strong finish. Today in Boston was no different.
