Eliud Kipchoge 9th, Sifan Hassan Sets Aussie Soil Record at Sydney Marathon
Eliud Kipchoge 9th, Sifan Hassan Sets Aussie Soil Record at Sydney Marathon
For the first time in ten years, the World Marathon Majors expands as marathon GOAT Eliud Kipchoge and Olympic champ Sifan Hassan lined up.

For the first time in ten years, the World Marathon Majors have expanded, and Sifan Hassan and Hailemaryam Kiros will forever be remembered as a part of that expansion as the winners of the first Sydney Marathon under the major classification.
The 2025 Sydney Marathon became the series' seventh race and first in the Australian continent. Despite concerns over saturation, Olympic gold medalists of both past and present were present to inaugurate the race's first running as a major, headlined by marathon GOAT Eliud Kipchoge and 2024 Olympic gold medalist Sifan Hassan on the women's side.
Sydney is thought by some to be the toughest of the Majors, with significant elevation changes throughout. For Kipchoge, the two-time Olympic champion who has failed to win his last three races and entered Sydney at age 40, the race was a test to see if he could still maintain world-beating form on the roads; he targeted the 2:06:18 course record (set by provisionally suspended athlete Brimin Kipkorir) in addition to the win. Neither was easy, as he was expected to face two-time Tokyo Marathon champ Birhanu Legese (2:02:48 PB) -- though Legese himself had struggled in his last two marathons. Legese's countryman Dawit Wolde, who won the Xiamen Marathon earlier this year and has a 2:03:48 PB, was also expected to challenge. Brian Shrader, who was just 23rd in Boston and has a 2:09:46 PB, was the only American in either of the elite fields -- though NCAA fans appreciated Edward Cheserek's entry post-2:05:24 PB for 12th in Valencia.
In the women's race, the Dutch enigma Sifan Hassan attempted to do wonders again. She shocked by winning the Paris Olympic marathon after medaling in the 5K and 10K, and most recently was 3rd in the London Marathon before withdrawing from a planned one-mile track race at the London DL. She'll face former marathon world record holder Brigid Kosgei, 2nd at the Hamburg Marathon this year, and last year's Sydney winner Workenesh Edesa who set the 2:21:41 course record.

6:45 P.M. ET - Two winners, two course records: Hassan dominates in 2:18:22
Kipchoge may not have delivered, but pre-race favorite Sifan Hassan certainly did. Hassan pushed with 16:10 and then 15:45 5K splits from 30K to 40K, breaking her Ethiopian competitors Kumeshi Sichala and Workenesh Edesa. The strategy worked and she finished with a 2:18:22 final time, breaking the 2:21:41 course record by a considerable margin.
Top Aussie finisher Leanne Pompeani ran 2:24:47, tripping up slightly on her finish tape, to place 7th in her second-ever marathon.

6:37 P.M. ET - Kiros wins: 2:06:06 for the fastest time ever in Australia; Kipchoge 9th
The Australian subcontinent has seen its fastest marathon ever. Hailemaryam Kiros breaks the course record to win the first WMM edition of Sydney, ahead of Gobena and Ramakongoana.
The marathon man of the decade, Eliud Kipchoge, finishes 9th in 2:09:28. It's a disappointing result, but he still receives thunderous applause crossing the line. Cheserek finishes a competitive 5th in 2:07:08 as the man who made the first break, Laban Korir, was 7th.
In a post-race interview, Kipchoge gracefully thanks Australia for hosting the race.
Top Australian honors goes to Haftu Strintzos in 14th -- this race doubled as the Australian national championships.

6:35 P.M. ET - With a K to go, it looks like Kiros has it won
Hailemaryam Kiros may just be your first Sydney World Marathon Major winner. His break this time is definitive, and he's powering through the final 500 meters. Gobena has admit defeat as the race now looks only against the clock. It'll be a close one against the course record.
6:33 P.M. ET - Gobena and Kiros trading blows as the Lesothan Ramakongoana coming up behind
As if this duel couldn't get more exciting, a third challenger Ramakongoana, who took the early lead, has pulled up just eight seconds behind. It doesn't seem like he's making up more ground than that yet, but having him in the backdrop could be giving Gobena and Kiros extra motivation to push the pace.
40K Men:
1. Addisu Gobena AGA (01:59:55, 00:14:37 split)
2. Hailemaryam Kiros KEBEDEW (01:59:56, 00:14:37 split)
3. Tebello RAMAKONGOANA (02:00:04, 00:14:45 split)
6:22 P.M. ET - Kiros and Gobena are going for it! Hassan has made her break
The last battle of the 2025 Sydney Marathon is set as Ethiopians Hailemaryam Kiros and Addisu Gobena have broke from the pack and are fighting for the win. Kiros, 11th at the '20 World Half Marathon Championships, has a 2:04:35 best from placing 5th at Berlin last year.
In the women's race, Hassan has split 16:10 from 30K to 35K and is all alone now with a 45 second lead over Edesa and Sichala. It's likely the winning move, if she can hold onto it.
35K Women:
1. Sifan HASSAN (01:55:52, 00:16:10 split)
2. Workenesh Edesa GURMESA (01:56:37, 00:16:54 split)
3. Kumeshi SICHALA (01:56:58, 00:17:14 split)
6:15 P.M. ET - Gobena leading the men as the top seven are set
It's down to seven at 35K. Addisu Gobena, who ran 2:05:01 to win Dubai last year, has been breaking the wind, but Ed Cheserek is right there with him followed by Korir and early-race leader Ramakongoana. Behind them, it's Felix Kirwa, Hailemaryam Kiros, and the Moroccan Mustapha Houdadi -- that's it, and your winner will likely come from that group. Kipchoge is 12 seconds back.
35K Men:
1. Addisu Gobena AGA (01:45:18, 00:14:54 split)
2. Edward CHESEREK (01:45:18, 00:14:54 split)
3. Laban KORIR (01:45:18, 00:14:54 split)
4. Tebello RAMAKONGOANA (01:45:18, 00:14:54 split)
5. Felix Kiptoo KIRWA (01:45:19, 00:14:54 split)
6. Hailemaryam Kiros KEBEDEW (01:45:19, 00:14:54 split)
7. Mustapha HOUDADI (01:45:19, 00:14:54 split)
8. Eliud KIPCHOGE (01:45:31, 00:15:07 split)
9. Masato ARAO (01:45:38, 00:15:05 split)
10. Victor KIPCHIRCHIR (01:45:44, 00:00:00 split)
6:08 P.M. ET - Laban Korir makes the break! Kipchoge officially dropped
It didn't take long after 30K. Kenya's Laban Korir, 11th at the 2019 World Championships marathon and with a 2:05 PB from 2022, has made the first true break from the pack. Some went with him, but Kipchoge is officially off the back of it, meaning his chance at one final World Marathon Majors win is likely done for.
At the women's 30K split, Hassan and Edesa have a two-second lead over Sichala. It looks like the Sifan-Workenesh duel predicted at the start is finally coming to fruition.
30K Women:
1. Sifan HASSAN (01:39:42, 00:16:34 split)
2. Workenesh Edesa GURMESA (01:39:42, 00:16:34 split)
3. Kumeshi SICHALA (01:39:44, 00:16:36 split)
4. Leanne POMPEANI (01:42:22, 00:17:22 split)
5. Jessica STENSON (01:42:23, 00:17:24 split)
6:01 P.M. ET - Kipchoge still in control at 30K, Legese dropped
We've reached the dreaded 30K split of the marathon, traditionally when the 'wall' starts to hit. Not a problem for Kipchoge so far, as he's still controlling a pack of about 9 runners. His biggest rival coming in, Birhanu Legese, has officially dropped as he's 14 seconds behind the lead now. That leaves Addisu Gobena (2:05:01 PB), runner-up at the Daegu Marathon this year, as the man in the spotlight right now in front.
Their split is good for 2:07:07 pace, meaning the 2:06:18 course record will be a tough one.
1. Addisu Gobena AGA (01:30:23, 00:14:52 split)
2. Eliud KIPCHOGE (01:30:24, 00:14:53 split)
