On a fog-drenched morning at Balboa Park in San Diego, the nation’s top girls toed the line with one goal in mind: survive, then strike. When the dust settled, it was Midwest star Natasza Dudek who stood alone, adding a national title to an already flawless season.
A Championship Race From The Opening Mile
From the gun, the race wasted no time revealing its shape. A lead pack quickly formed, and by the first major checkpoints, Natasza Dudek, Blair Bartlett, and Jaelyn Williams made it clear they were racing for hardware. As the field began to string out across the rolling Balboa Park terrain, Dudek and Bartlett began to apply pressure, eventually separating themselves from Williams and turning the championship into the duel many anticipated.
Dudek and Blair Bartlett matched each other stride for stride through the middle stages of the race, answering every surge and covering every move. Bartlett, one of the most consistent national performers of the season, stayed glued to Dudek’s shoulder, refusing to let the Midwest phenom dictate the outcome uncontested.
The fog hung low as the two pushed the pace, with neither willing to blink.
Dudek Answers Every Question
When it mattered most, Dudek showed why she entered the meet undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the nation. Over the final stretch, she found another gear, just enough to create separation from Bartlett and secure the win in 16:55.7.
Bartlett crossed the line just 1.4 seconds back in 16:57.1, capping off another elite performance on the national stage. Despite answering every move made by Dudek, it was not quite enough to deny the Midwest standout on the day.
For Dudek, the victory carried added significance. Racing with the composure of a seasoned veteran, the sophomore followed in the footsteps of her sister, who captured the XC National Championship in 2019.
Williams Completes The Podium
Behind the front two, Jaelyn Williams continued her late-season surge, running a smart and controlled race to claim third place. Her podium finish validated the momentum she built through CIF State and NXN and capped off a breakout championship performance.
As the fog lifted over Balboa Park, so too did the curtain on the 2025 cross-country season. What began months ago with Golden Tickets, regional battles, and national showdowns ended with a championship worthy of the moment.
One champion. One course. One final reminder of how unforgiving and unforgettable cross country can be.
