In what could be one of the strongest fields ever assembled for the 2026 TCS London Marathon, reigning champion Sabastian Sawe is predicting that it would take a London Marathon course record for him to be able to go back-to-back; the current record is 2:01:25 which was set by Kelvin Kiprtum in 2023.
Dating back to 2023, Sawe has been a consistent force on the roads, as prior to stepping up to the marathon distance, he notched victories in several major locations including Copenhagen, Prague, Berlin, Rome, Sevilla, and a title at the World Athletics World Road Running Championships. His current personal best of 58:05 in the half-marathon currently stands as the ninth-fastest in history.
Once Sawe moved up to the marathon in 2024, he won the Valencia Marathon with a 2:02:05, which was the fastest marathon ran in 2024 and is the fifth-fastest time in history. He followed this up with a victory at both the TCS London Marathon and Berlin Marathon in 2025.
"The TCS London Marathon course is one of the most beautiful and fastest course in the world. It was my first time running in London last year and it was one of the proudest moments of my life to cross the line as champion. I am excited to be coming back in 2026 and I know now a little bit more about what I can expect. I am sure with the quality of athletes coming to London it will take another fast time to win again, perhaps the type of effort the great Kelvin Kiptum put in when he set the course record in 2023," said Sawe.
Looking at a handful of the names that could challenge Sawe for the title:
Joshua Cheptegei (UGA) - 5,000m/10,000m World Record holder, three-time World Championship gold medalist, 2024 Paris Olympic Games champion, 2:04:52 personal best from Amsterdam, ninth place finisher at the 2025 Tokyo Marathon.
Jacob Kiplimo (UGA) - Runner-up to Sawe in 2025, 2025 Chicago Marathon champion, half-marathon world record holder (56:42), Tokyo 2021 Olympics bronze medalist, 2022 World Championships bronze medalist, three-time World Athletics Worlds Cross Country Champion.
Tamirat Tola (ETH) - Reigning Olympic Marathon champion (Paris 2024), 2016 Olympic bronze medalist, London 2017 World Championships silver medalist, Oregon 2022 World Championships gold medalist, 2023 TCS New York City Marathon champion, 2026 Doha Marathon Champion.
