But we’re not talking about Josh Kerr this week. We’re talking about The Return of Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

- Jakob's Return: Running the 1500m at the Silesia Diamond League
On August 23, at the Silesia Diamond League Meeting, Ingebrigtsen will run his first 1500m since the 2025 World Outdoor Championships. That race saw Ingebrigtsen fail to qualify out of the preliminary round.
But since undergoing achilles surgery in February, and spending months and months of rehab - Jakob is back. The question is - how back is he?
Now of course, we saw a vintage Ingebrigtsen kick at the European Championships last week. Ingebrigtsen closed in a 54.79 last 400m to rise past Jimmy Gressier and win the European 5K Title.
His final time was 13:15.29. He looked healthy,he looked instinctive and most importantly, he looked fast - but the 5K was never a true test for Jakob, the 1500m is.
After all, Jakob won the Olympic 5K Title in 2024, and the World Titles in 2022 and 2023. I’d argue that over his career, the 5K has been a more natural racing fit for Ingebrigtsen and before you scold me in the nonexistent comments - I want you to look at the stats.
Since 2022, Ingebrigtsen is 22-7 in races of the 1500m/Mile variety. In the 5,000m, his record stands at 8-1. Since 2022, he has three Global Golds over the 5,000m and two silvers in the 1500m.
The 1500m exposes Ingebrigtsen to more variables, and more athletes with quicker closing speed. In a 5K field, Ingebrigtsen often has the best kick. That’s not always the case in a 1500m.
This weekend he’ll face the 2024 Olympic 1500m Champion Cole Hocker, as well as the 2025 World 1500m Champion Isaac Nader.
Ingebrigtsen is 5-1 versus Cole Hocker in outdoor 1500m finals. His only loss came at the 2024 Paris Olympics, when Hocker’s last 100m blitzed Ingebrigtsen and Josh Kerr. Since then, the two have seen each other three times, with Ingebrigtsen finishing ahead in the three successive races at the end of the 2024 season.
Against Nader, Ingebrigtsen is undefeated in the outdoor 1500m. 9-0 versus his Portuguese foe.
Last week’s 5K told us that Ingebrigtsen is healthy again. The Silesia DL 1500m will answer a much more important question; whether Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the 1500m mastermind, is truly back.
