After stunning Olympic champions Cole Hocker and Jakob Ingebrigtsen in Silesia, Ethan Strand faces an even bigger test in Thursday’s Zurich rematch.

Ethan Strand beating Cole Hocker and Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the 1500m at the Silesia Diamond League on Sunday was a surprise to some.

If you knew him when he was younger, maybe it wasn’t a total surprise.

His mom, Lori, was my cross country coach at Samford and a Division I athlete. His dad, Scott, was a former professional runner and helped as a volunteer with our Samford squad. Ethan would occasionally come run with us as a small kid.

Watching him hang with the college runners, I thought, “Yeah, this kid is going to be good.” He had the form, the drive, and the genes working in his favor.

“Good” was underselling it.

On August 10, Strand found out he had been elevated from runner-up to the 2025 U.S. outdoor champion in the 1500m following a doping ban for winner Jonah Koech.

Less than two weeks later, the NCAA record-holder in the indoor mile and indoor 3000m ran 3:30.77 in Silesia to win his first Diamond League race, finishing ahead of Olympic champions Hocker and Ingebrigtsen in what was supposed to be their big showdown.

Can Strand Do It Again?

This Thursday, the trio will line up again at the Zurich Diamond League, this time with 2024 Olympic 1500m bronze medalist Yared Nuguse also in the mix.

Strand has a chance to prove Silesia wasn’t just a breakthrough performance on the international stage, but the beginning of something bigger.

Taking down Ingebrigtsen and Hocker is a great story, but knocking them off again, along with Nuguse, might tell us just how good Ethan Strand really is.

Another Silesia Rematch

It’s not the only rematch worth watching Thursday on FloTrack.
