Hagos Gebrhiwet is heading into uncharted territory at the 2026 Sydney Marathon, but few runners making a marathon debut arrive with a resume like his.

The Ethiopian is the second-fastest 5,000m runner in history, having clocked an Ethiopian record of 12:36.73 in 2024. He also owns a 57:41 half-marathon PB (World #4 All-Time), ranking among the fastest performances in history, giving him the kind of speed and endurance that makes his move up to 26.2 miles one of the most intriguing storylines in Sydney.

Gebrhiwet's accolades stretch well beyond his all-time marks. He is an Olympic bronze medalist, a World Championship silver and bronze medalist, a Diamond League Final winner and the 2023 World Road Running Championships 5K champion.

Now comes the ultimate test: the marathon. All eyes will be on whether one of the greatest 5,000m runners ever can translate his track pedigree to the roads.

The Official Seventh World Marathon Major takes off on Aug. 30th, 2026 in Sydney

U.S. and Canada audiences can watch the elite section beginning at 4:30 pm ET on August 29.

  • 4:30 PM – Elite men's and women’s race
  • 4:32 PM – Mass start Group 1
  • 5:05 PM – Mass start Group 2
  • 5:29 PM – Mass start Group 3

The Sydney Marathon Map

This iconic marathon’s map leads its participants down a gorgeous course, showcasing many of Sydney's gems. Athletes will traverse The Sydney Harbor Bridge, The Rocks, Centennial Park, with the finish line at the front steps of Sydney’s Opera House.
